Intel Buys McAfee

E-mail Print PDF

What's a hardware company going to do in a cloud world? Catching most industry observers unaware, Intel will purchase of all of McAfee’s common stock for $48 per share in cash, a $7.68 billion deal.

McAfee, which has enjoyed double-digit, year-over-year growth and nearly 80% gross margins last year, will be run as a wholly-owned subsidiary, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group.Intel Buys McAfee This acquisition, says Intel, "enables a combination of security software and hardware from one company to ultimately better protect consumers, corporations and governments as billions of devices - and the server and cloud networks that manage them - go online."

But it will also raise concerns about the power Intel will wield if it promotes McAfee with its OEM sales. Think of Microsoft-with-Internet-Explorer as a type of unfair bundle that governments will be looking for.

Security companies, competitors to McAfee, are probably shaking at the possibilities of Intel's concept of hardware-enhanced security. Unlike many acquistions that trigger related acquisitions, it leaves them with few options...AMD? ARM? Very unlikely...

Intel states: "The acquisition reflects that security is now a fundamental component of online computing. Today’s security approach does not fully address the billions of new Internet-ready devices connecting, including mobile and wireless devices, TVs, cars, medical devices and ATM machines as well as the accompanying surge in cyber threats. Providing protection to a diverse online world requires a fundamentally new approach involving software, hardware and services." Meanwhile the company has elevated  security to be on par with its strategic focus areas in energy-efficient performance and Internet connectivity.

Intel’s Software and Services Group is managed by Renée James, Intel senior vice president, and general manager of the group.

“Hardware-enhanced security will lead to breakthroughs in effectively countering the increasingly sophisticated threats of today and tomorrow,” says James. “This acquisition is consistent with our software and services strategy to deliver an outstanding computing experience in fast-growing business areas, especially around the move to wireless mobility.”

“McAfee is the next step in this strategy, and the right security partner for us,” she adds. “Our current work together has impressive prospects, and we look forward to introducing a product from our strategic partnership next year.”

The above comment regarding a product introduction implies the two were already working on a project and that project may indeed have kicked off the acquistion discussions.

McAfee, based in Santa Clara and founded in 1987, is the world’s largest dedicated security technology company with approximately $2 billion in revenue in 2009. With its approximately 6100 employees, McAfee will join Intel's workforce to jointly explore future product concepts to further strengthen security in the cloud network and myriad of computers and devices people use in their everyday lives.

What? Plasma Panels Set All-Time Sales Record

E-mail Print PDF

Plasma bigRumours of its death are greatly exaggerated as plasma sets an all-time sales high.

Led by the price gap between PDP and LCD panel, Q2 shipments of PDP module shipments recorded 5M units and an increase of 27% M/M or 53% Y/Y.

And if circumstances continue, the PDP module shipments for year 2010 can reach 19.00M units, largely exceed the 16.20M units originally forecasted in early 2010.

In shipment by size, 50"class PDP module shipments exceeded 2M units with the expanded share penetration of large-sized PDP module. For the 42" class, the share is recorded at 56%. Looking at the shipments by maker, Panasonic, a company that had shown decreased shipments in the previous first-quarter (the quarter for yearly account due to inventory organization and transition to new product) showed shipments exceeding 2M units in Q2 2010 to recover its market share of 40% level.

Samsung SDI shipped its record high 1.62M units shipments and LG Electronics shipped 1.15M units.

COC is showing relatively lower shipments compared to others but the shipment is expected to continuously grow with the company's new 42" model launch in Q2 2010.

The Korea-based makers are currently running at maximum production capacity. Their PDP module shipments for 2H 2010 is expected to remain at the level of slight increase. If Panasonic increases its operating ratio actively then, the market share is expected to largely increase.

Jusy Hong, senior analyst in Display research group at Displaybank notes "the current booming of PDP module business can be reasoned from continuous demand increase for PDP TV as well as lower price compared to LCD. While LCD panel price is lowered in its price declining gap depending on the supply/demand situation, PDP is widening its price gap as the price continuously has decreased."

Hong adds "while LCD TV panel price declining trend is expected continue until next month and either slightly increase or maintain from September, PDP module price is expected to go down during the 2H of 2010."

$10 Billion Shot HURD Round the World

E-mail Print PDF

Mark Hurd is pushed out as CEO of HP. His abrupt fall from high dropped HP stock 10% in a single day: the company lost $10 billion in value overnight.

Mr. Hurd (who came in to fix HP after Carly Fiorina's Compaq acquisition) fell from grace by his own hand. Before he left, Hurd personally paid out to settle a sexual harassment accusation at the heart of his departure.Hurd and HER

The complainant is a 50-year old actress who once appeared in "steamy" films like Easy Rider– The Ride Back, Blood Dolls, The Outsider, Sheer Passion and the unrated Body of Influence 2. (And a reality show called Age of Love.)

Somewhere Carly Fiorina must be clapping with glee at Hurd’s demise. This is the third straight CEO in a 5-year row pushed or fired by HP’s Board. Hurd reportedly received $24.2 million in pay in 2009 (and $42.4 million in 2008) and lost a 3-year $100 million contract deal when he was accused of fiddling expense reports involving this woman (Hurd denies this). Being caught in an office imbroglio is a good enough reason for the HP Board.

Hey, don’t feel bad for him...Hurd gets $28 million cash & stock. OK, so now he might have to wait for that stock to go back up...but probably not too long as Hurd has analysts think Hurd has left HP with adequate direction nad management.

And lots of IT companies without qualms will make the competent Hurd a job offer...just watch and see. Especially since many CEOs (think Larry Ellison) land on the side that Hurd should have never have been fired for something as silly as ethical reasons. Sorry, Larry...we actually like HP for this ingrained sense of company ethics.

Get a Look Inside London’s New Apple Store

E-mail Print PDF

The whole of New York's Fifth Avenue Apple store would fit inside the main area of the new Apple Store at Covent Garden – that doesn't even include the area for the world's largest Genius Bar in the new London store.

Apple Store at Covent Garden Located about a mile from the flagship Regent Street store, Apple took an 1877 building at One Covent Garden Piazza and restored it.

The interior is made from stone, brick and English Oak to create a relaxing environment flooded with natural light and with a central courtyard big enough to hold a few hundred people (for the next iTunes festival, and in-store appearances by celebs).

Apple reportedly removed a set of brick arches piece-by-piece and then rebuilt the arches– just because they wanted those arches 4 inches lower.

Shot on iPhone4 with a special SteadyCam rig, this video tour is impressive for two reasons. First, it shows the powerful emotional response that Apple generates from customers. It’s an Apple feeding frenzy with a store packed with rabid technophiliacs (OK, those MAC fanboys and fangirls, too).

Second it’s impressive because this tour was filmed using a customized SteadyCam that turns the iPhone4 into an acceptable videocamera recorder.

Some firsts for this Apple location:

  • 300 staff... more than any other Apple Store in the world.
  • The Apple debut of its new Pro Labs training programme.
  • A new Briefing Room to help small businesses.
  • First to stock store-specific goods, starting with MacBook and iPhone cases branded with the Covent Garden name and design.
