Biostar Intros A68MDE Micro-ATX Motherboard

Biostar announces what it says is an entry-level motherboard for AMD FM2+ processors-- the A68MDE, based on the micro-ATX form factor and featuring the Radeon Dual Graphics-capable A68H chipset.

Being aimed at customers on a budget, the A68MDE features a single PCIe x16 slot for discrete graphics together with another PCIe slot for x1 devices. It has two DIMM slots for dual-channel memory, and supports up to 32GB DDR3 RAM overclocked up to 2600MHz.

Nikkei: Sharp Considers Buying Toshiba PC Business

Sharp is looking to return to the PC market, Nikkei reports-- specifically through the purchase of the ailing Toshiba PC unit, as well as help from parent company Foxconn.

The Japanese newspaper says talks have already begun "at the working level," while analysts suggest the price for the unit totals around ¥10 billion (or $91.9 million). Previously Toshiba considered selling the PC unit to Taiwan's Asus, but the deal failed to materialise.

As mentioned earlier, the Toshiba PC unit is a loss maker. In fiscal 2016 it saw operating losses reaching ¥500m on sales of ¥191.8bn, the result of competition from the Asian mainland, not to mention the generally shrinking PC market. As a result it has already scaled back operations by pulling out of consumer PCs in emerging markets.

AMD follows on the CES 2018 reveal of the Ryzen 3 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G-- a pair of Ryzen desktop CPUs with integrated Radeon Vega graphics-- with the quiet reveal of hardware details on its website.

Like other Ryzen 3 CPUs, the Ryzen 3 2200G features 4 cores and four threads running at 3.7GHz. On the other hand the Ryzen 5 2400G features 4 cores and 8 threads, and offers maximum boost clock of 3.9GHz. The two CPUs have 6MB of level 2 and level 3 cache, and an identical configurable thermal design power (cTDP) rating of 45-65W.

The Revolt Pro is described by the company as "the first expandable power supply." customers can connect a Revolt Pro with any other power supply to combine the total power output. In addition the secondary PSU acts as a backup power source via integrated redundancy feature.

In dual PSU configuration the 80 PLUS Gold Revolt Pro continuously balances the power load of both power supplies to maintain optimal efficiency levels. As mentioned earlier it comes in two models, 850W and 1000W.

Gartner: "Moderate" Decline for Q4 EMEA PCs

Gartner:

According to Gartner EMEA PC shipments total 21.8 million in Q4 2017-- a -1.4% Y-o-Y decline, with the market hit by ailing demand in the UK and weaker-than-expected German shipments.

The analyst expects a Y-o-Y increase in W. European PC revenues for the quarter, while a combination of currency fluctuations, rising component costs and a product-mix shift towards higher-value products (such as gaming systems and high-performance notebooks) brings an increase in ASPs.

On a global basis, Q4 2017 PC shipments are down by -2% Y-o-Y to 71.6m units, making a 13th consecutive quarter of falling global PC shipments. Meanwhile full-year 2017 is the 6th year of annual PC declines, as shipments total 262.5m, a fall of -2.8% decline.

PC hardware maker NZXT steps into motherboard space with the NZ Z730-- a surprisingly attractive number (for a motherboard!) based around the Intel Z370 chipset.

As seen at CES 2018, the N7 Z730 is built out of matte black or white metal, with the only exceptions to the minimalist look being the CPU, PCIe slots, power and other connections. NZXT says the design is optimised for both straightforward setup and easy customisability, while Adaptive Noise Reduction optimises cooling and noise balance.

Apple starts shipping its first professional AIO desktop machine-- the iMac Pro, a workstation-grade machine aimed at demanding workflows such as video and graphics rendering, VR content creation and 3D rendering.

First presented back at WWDC 2017, the iMac Pro comes in a number of configurations, all packed inside the 27-inch 5K (5120 x 2880 resolution) display found in the latest iMac. The base model carries an 8-core Intel Xeon W processor, Radeon Vega Pro 56 GPU, 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 ECC RAM and 1TB storage. Customers can upgrade the processor to a 10-, 14- or 18-core option, while RAM and storage max out to 128GB or 4TB respectively.

Zotac announces a family of upgradeable compact form-factor desktop systems-- the MEK1, a gaming PC range available in 2 configurations, both featuring Intel Kaby Lake CPUs and Nvidia Pascal GPUs.

Available in either black or white chassis Zotac says are inspired by "future robotics and mechanical anatomy," the MEK1 PCs are based on the same Mini-ITX motherboard. Included as standard are 16GB dual-channel DDR4-2400 RAM, a 240GB PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD and a 1TB 2.5-inch HDD, with the difference boiling down to the choice of CPU and GPU.

Nvidia Claims "Most Powerful PC GPU"

Nvidia presents what it claims is "the most powerful PC GPU ever created"-- the Titan V, the first consumer-grade GPU based on Volta architecture, previously the preserve of high performance computing applications.

Technically a trimmed-down (and, as such, less powerful) version of the enterprise-grade Tesla V100, the Titan V carries 21.1 billion transistors, 5120 Cuda cores, 640 additional tensor cores and 12GB of HBM2 memory on a massive 815mm sq die. The result is performance reaching up to 110 teraflops, or "9x that of its predecessor."
