Researchers Set Internet Speed Record

Researchers Set Internet Speed Record

Australian researchers create an internet connection with speeds reaching up to 44.2 terabits pers second, a record achieved over 75km of glass fibre using a single optical chip.

Hailing from Monash, Swinburne and RMIT universities, the researchers managed to create such a connection using a "micro-comb." According to the paper detailing the experiment, the micro-comb “generates very sharp and equidistant frequency lines in a tiny microphotonic chip.” In a few words, the micro-comb loops light around a ring to produce 80 beams at various infrared wavelengths. Each beam carries a stream of data, and since all the wavelengths of light are all correlated, the data streams could be "packed" tightly together using nearly all the available light spectrum.

Thunderbolt Flaw Leads to Hacking!

Thunderbolt Flaw Leads to Hacking!

Dutch researcher Björn Ruytenberg reveals the common Thunderbolt port has a serious flaw-- "Thunderspy," a means for hackers to bypass the login screen of a sleeping or locked PC in order to gain full access of the data within.

The flaw resides in essentially all Thunderbolt-enabled Windows or Linux PCs manufactured before 2019, and allows for what the security industry dubs an "evil maid attack." This involves the potential attacker being alone with the PC (for example, in a hotel room), and simply requires opening the case of the target laptop with a screwdriver. Once the machine is open, the attacker simply needs to momentarily attach a device, reprogram the firmware and reattach the backplate for full access to the laptop. The operation, Ruytenberg says, takes all of 5 minutes.

Rebranded Ethernet Consortium Announces 800GbE Spec

The 25 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium, the entity behind the 25, 50 and 100Gbps ethernet specifications, rebrands to the Ethernet Technology Consortium (ETC) and announces the next networking standard, 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE).

“Ethernet is evolving very quickly and as a group, we felt that having 25G in the name was too constraining for the scope of the consortium,” the organisation says. “We wanted to open that up so that the industry could have an organisation that could enhance ethernet specifications for new and developing markets.”

Cypress Intros 6th Gen USB-C Controllers

Cypress announces a pair of USB-C controllers for next-generation desktops and laptops-- the EZ-PD CCG6DF and EZ-PD CCG6SF, single-chip solutions featuring USB 3.2, DisplayPort and Power Delivery support.

The two controllers also support the upcoming USB4 standard, as well as the latest Intel Thunderbolt platforms. Both integrate multiple features from previous generation Cypress controller designs, such as a VBUS provider load switch for power with fault protection. An embedded 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0 processor allows firmware upgrades for USB4 support through 64KB of flash memory.

Linksys Networking at CES 2020

Linksys takes to CES 2020 to announce a range of networking hardware featuring 5G and Wifi 6 technology, all promising to bring faster downloads and lower latency while future-proofing the home.

The first set of products announced revolves around 5G. The 5G Mobile Hotspot offers both 5G and Wifi 6, and has a USB for Quick Charge capabilities. The 5G Modem provides access to 5G networking at home, and combines with Velop systems to provide mesh networking. The Velop 5G Mesh Gateway does something with Linkys Intelligent Mesh technology and AX/Wifi 6 for a two-in-one modem and router solution. Finally the 5G Outdoor Router does what it says on the tin, and adds a 10Gbps wired connection.
