The Probability Of A Better Chip

E-mail Print PDF

Digital computer chips think in 2 ways - yes or no. Lyric Semiconductor's "probability processor" adds "quite often" and "very rarely" - meaning it potentially does a much better job than Intel or AMD's products.

Lyric Probability Processor

Lyric claims its LEC specialised flash memory processor offers 30X reduction in size and a 12X improvement in power consumption. It is based on 10 years' worth of research by MIT and Lyric.

Today's world requires more predictions based on behaviour changes, from traffic route prediction to deciding whether an email is spam or not. Traditional chips are not enough to solve real life problems, says Lyric.

Lyric is working on the GP5 Probability Processor. It will be able to perform such probability calculations 1000X more efficiently than a CPU. This chip won't replace CPU's but complements them like current graphic and audio processors. This could become a standard component like today's GPUs.

Google Admits Android Not Tablet-Ready

Android isn't being used by Google itself on any tablets.

Google Tablet

Google's director of mobile products Hugo Barra confirms the platform is not yet optimised for iPad rivals.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab runs on Android, as do devices demonstrated at IFA 2010.

However Barra describes the Galaxy Tab as a larger phone rather than a tablet.

This announcement suggests the first breed of Android devices may yield to another ready to take on Apple's tablet.

Google vs. Google in Tablets?

Google's Android-based tablets will have a new competitor: it's Google. Tablets running Google's Chrome OS are coming, making multiple Google brands in mobile OS.

Google says Chrome and Android will have distinct jobs, and that the two OS won't overlap in the consumer market: "Google's Chrome won't squeeze out Android, according to …there are different problems to be solved in different categories of consumer products…But that doesn't mean that … one wins and one doesn't win. You need different technologies for different solutions.'"

But store sales staff will need to explain…even if the first Chrome OS tablet is not this November (as Google denies the timing).

iSuppli Sees DRAM Shortage for Q3/Q4

DRAM makers trying to recover from the downturn last year can now face a shortage in second half, sending DRAM prices higher, warns iSuppli.

DRAM makers face an inability to obtain needed production equipment and problems implementing sub-50-nanometer technology, according to iSuppli.

The three DRAM makers in the best position to benefit from rising chip prices are Samsung, Hynix and Micron, (iSuppli suggests they've already upgraded tolatest technology).

Gartner says Samsung maintains its lead in DRAM with a 35.3% share of revenue, followed by Hynix with 20.9%, Elpida with 17.3%, Micron  13.3% and Nanya with 4.4%
