The Death of the JPEG?

E-mail Print PDF

Google will unveil WebP, their new graphics format for displaying. JPEG file format is traditionally used for images on the web, but Google finds it too slow. 65% of bytes on the Web are from images and WebP could cut 40% from image file sizes.

Google WebP

The most common image formats on the web today work on technology from more than a decade ago. Engineers at Google looked for a way to further compress images like JPEG to make them load faster, yet preserve quality and resolution.

You can bet Google is looking at video compression, too.

The new flash controller is backwards compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 ports and offers transfer speeds of 100MB/s or more in 3.0, depending on configuration.

VIA Labs Associate VP David Hsu says this technology will pave the way for fast and affordable flash drives of over 32GB capacity.

The Kno is twice as much tablet - with dual 14" touchscreens.

Kno Dualscreen

Designed for students, the Kno displays a double page spread without scrolling. The screens can fold back to form a single panel slate.

It runs on Flash and accepts handwriting input. The device allows users to take notes and highlight text directly on electronic textbooks.

A built in browser supports HTML5 and Flash.

The Kno also plays HD video and records audio.

A single screen version will also be available.

HP and Hynix Work on ReRAM

HP joins forces with Hynix Semiconductors to bring memristor to market. HP is just 3 years away from bringing the memristor to market as a new product called ReRAM.

memristor

ReRaMs' first application will be as an alternative to flash memory, since memristors consume less power and potentially more reliable.

The memristor, or 'memory resistor' is a new circuit element. Memristors require less energy, are faster than present storage technologies and retain information even when the power is off.

This technology potentially makes instant-on, low-power PCs a reality.

In 1971 Professor Leon Chua said the memristor could be the 4th basic circuit element together with the capacitor, resistor and inductor.
