Sony Working on PSVR Headset Sequel?

E-mail Print PDF

According to Bloomberg, Sony is working on a sequel to the PlayStation VR headset, set for release after the launch of the PlayStation 5-- meaning it will probably hit the market sometime on 2021.

Playstation VRA followup to the PSVR headset makes sense. After all, the PS5 promises to be backwards compatible with PS4 games, providing it with a ready library or VR-enabled software. One also has to keep in mind the original PSVR headset was a success, with sales reaching over 5 million units, meaning consumers should be ready for a more powerful version. That said, no details are available regarding the capabilities of such a sequel, but the 2017 "CUH-ZVR2" model hints at features such as better cable management, a slimmer connection cable and an updated processor box with HDR passthrough support.

DigiTimes says upstream supply chain partners kicked off component production for the new model before the Lunar New Year, but the epidemic has put on the break. As a result, shipments may peak at a monthly level of over 3.5 million units in Q2 2020, since assemblers will only start ramping up shipments from March.

A three-stop "Hideaway Hinge" holds the device open at three different different, while a "Flex" mode splits the UI into two 4-inch screens, with a different app running on each half. The device also has a tiny 1.06-inch, 300 x 116 resolution cover display, allowing one to check the time or simple notifications without actually opening the full display.
