VGA Declines as DisplayPort Grows

E-mail Print PDF

78.9m PCs WW will carry DisplayPort in 2011, IHS iSuppli says-- with global 2011 shipments growing by 154.6% from 2010's 30.9m.

DisplayPortAccording to iSuppli DisplayPort is already going through rapid growth. Last year's expansion totalled 136.5%, while the analyst predicts a 137% increase for 2012, before 2013's 46% and 2014's 62% growth, with 400m DisplayPort-enabled devices shipping by 2014's end.

Pushing forward the momentum for DisplayPort is Apple, whose desktops and laptops carry the interface since 2009, alongside early adopters Dell, HP and Lenovo.

The 3 major CPU and GPU vendors-- Intel, AMD and NVidia-- are also integrating DisplayPort in their current offerings as they signal a 5-year horizon to finally end their VGA support.

DisplayPort is more attractive to vendors as a less bulky and simpler display alternative, particularly for mobile PCs and graphics cards-- 41.8m notebooks/laptops and 14.7m graphics cards will ship in 2011 carrying the interface, according to iSuppli.

DisplayPort's going will be slower in the monitor segment, which has longer refresh cycles and legacy support requirements for video and graphics devices-- meaning it will remain a common interface on monitors for yet some time to come.

Where Will Game's Journey Lead To?

Game's Chief Executive Ian Shephard says the retailer "is on a journey"-- even if the group's 2010 preliminary results show its total sales falling by -8.3% Y-o-Y, with total turnover reaching £1.6BN (compared to 2009's £1.8BN).

GameThe retailer's UK and Ireland stores show decreases in sales for 2010 of -12.8%, while its international stores' sales are at -1.3%.

Showing growth are revenue from preowned game sales (3.3% Y-o-Y growth, to £386.9M) and digital revenue, growing by 27% Y-o-Y to reach £41M.

Q1 2011 isn't looking much better either-- total sales are down by -14.3% across the entire group, and down by -14.9% for its UK and Ireland stores. Game's international stores' sales for Q1 2011 are also down, by -15.8%, while the group's online sales are the only ones showing growth, by 2.1%.

The direction for Game's journey, then? Judging from such results, probably more store closings (as it already closed 15 UK stores in Q1 2011) to concentrate on digital and second-hand sales, its 2 segments still showing growth.

Flash Memory Gets Ever Smaller

SandiskSanDisk and Toshiba's developments in NAND flash memory get even smaller-- producing a 64Gb X2-based monolithic chip with 19nm technology.

The 19nm 64Gb X2 device will see sampling this quarter, before high-volume production following Q2 2011. At that time Sandisk will also start producing X3 products with the 19nm technology.

The process is the company's most advanced yet, and should allow for smaller high capacity removable and embedded storage devices for use in all sorts of mobile devices, from tablets to mobile phones.

SandDisk says the technology is not only the world's smallest, but also the lowest-cost, thanks to its ABL architecture coupled with proprietary programming algorithms and multi-level data storage management schemes.

Sony announces its take on the tablet market with 2 Android-powered devices-- codnamed "S1" and "S2".

Sony TabletThe S1 looks like a fairly standard tablet, with a 9.4" display and wedge-shaped case Sony says is an "off-center of gravity design" that's supposedly more stable and comfortable for users to hold.

The S2 looks more interesting-- with a closable clamshell design with x2 5.5" displays, which can either act as a single large screen or each display different content.

Both models' innards seem to be identical, even if the only details available include Android 3.0, wifi and optional 3G or 4G. Aiming for Sony customers, the tablets can also act as remotes for Bravia devices and share media via DLNA with compatible devices.

The tablets will launch with Sony's Qriocity service (media), Reader Store (ebooks) and the Playstation Suite (games).
