Best Buy UK Launch Underwhelms

E-mail Print PDF

Best Buy Europe chief marketing officer Jeff Severts admits his lack of satisfaction with the retail chain's UK launch in an interview with Marketing Week. In his own words: “I’m not satisfied that enough people in the UK know about Best Buy or understand it with the intimacy I’d like."

Best BuyAlongside the chain's failing to make its desired impact on the UK market (despite launching 6 stores in 2010), the last 6 months see the exit of a number of senior Best Buy executives-- including European CEO Scott Wheway, branded operations chief Paul Antoniadis and head of online DeVere Forster.

Analysts expect Best Buy UK to post losses of £45m this year-- fuelling speculation of the chain's take on the European market falling flat.

Severts however insists business remains on course, with plans to open 80 more UK stores remaining the same (only on a now unknown timescale).

Commentors also suggest declining W. European PC sales make part of the chain's launch disappointment-- where Gartner says consumer spending is shifting from PCs towards tablet devices, alongside adopting a wait-and-see approach (where customers prefer to wait for Q1 2011's new products and cheaper tablets).

Samsung shows off its Galaxy Tab follower at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress, named after its 10.1" (1280 x 800 resolution) sized screen-- one of a slew of Android 3.0 tablets to hit the market.

Galaxy Tab 10.1A 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor powers the Tab 10.1, and it comes with either 16GB or 32GB memory. It also carries the usual extras-- x2 cameras (one back-facing, the other front-facing), USB/bluetooth/wifi/HSPA connectivity, gyroscope, accelerometer and digital compass.

Dual speakers also provide surround sound, alongside a standard 3.5mm audio jack.

Construction is now plastic, not metal, making the device lighter (and weighing a total of 599 grams).

The device should be available in March, with no pricing details out yet.

Vodafone tore a phone apart...put the components in a keyboard box, added standard RCA connectors – and now you have the Vodafone Webbox, the first device of its kind, bringing affordable internet access to existing television set, just by plugging in a keyboard.

WebboxDeveloped with emerging markets in mind (where many don't yet have affordable internet access), the Webbox is a sleek, black, 14 x 25cm QWERTY keyboard. Webbox plugs into TV with no set-up required, converting any standard domestic television into an internet portal.

The Webbox home screen allows the customer to navigate easily between the core services: Opera Mini 5.1 internet access; SMS and email messaging; internet search and media services including FM radio and a photo gallery tool, as well as a music player.

Vodafone Webbox

The Webbox is on the Vodafone stand at Mobile World Congress 2011.

The Webbox Opera Mini browser runs over the 2.5G and EDGE mobile networks, compressing data by around 90% and so serving fast-loading internet pages. (Opera Mini is available across 20 markets, preloaded onto 32 handsets and downloadable to a total of 278 devices. There have been 9 million downloads of the Vodafone Opera Mini browser to date.)

The browser homepage comes with bookmarks such as news, sport and social networking sites as well as locally relevant apps such as a job search and application service. In addition, the portal comes with some games, a dictionary and a basic text editor.

Patrick Chomet, Vodafone’s Group Director of Terminals says: “...The simplicity of the product is striking – it brings the internet to the TV, be that at home for the family, in schools for education or in small businesses to assist local economic growth.”

In South Africa, Vodacom will start selling the Webbox from next week. Other markets across Vodafone’s emerging market footprint will launch in 2011. Vodacom will retail the Webbox at a one-off unit cost of R749 (c €75) with a free 2GB SD card, and prepaid SIM with R12 data credit.

Connected Cameras for W.Europe's Future

E-mail Print PDF

Digital Cameras need to become connected if they are to compete in the W. European market, InfoTrends predicts. As TVs, STBs, games consoles, mobile phones, tablet PCs and MP3 players all get online, the digital camera risks losing out.

Digital CameraCurrent smartphones already allow instant photo sharing over social networks-- something digital cameras generally don't. Consumers will soon be expecting this functionality from their digital cameras, alongside instant interfacing with any devices used to store, share, manage and print their photos.

InfoTrend says consumer interest in connected CE in W. Europe's 3 largest markets (France, Germany, UK) remains steady since 2007-- with around 40% of digital owners wanting to manage their photos using a variety of devices.

What is clear is users want to be "in the moment"-- instant sharing maximises an image's value. With smartphones offering a large variety of photo sharing services, it's clear digital cameras will also have to get in the connected game.

HTC Invests in the Cloud

Taiwan's HTC makes 2 big cloud-based investments-- spending nearly $90m to buy into OnLive and Saffron.

HTCThe $40m OnLive investment is, no doubt, to speed up development into cloud-based on demand mobile content. OnLive already has an iPad and Android tablet app out-- one that only allows users to spectate ongoing games.

Meanwhile Saffron earns a $48.6m investment. The British company already has an impressive client list, integrating its technology in products and services from HTC, LG, Paramount, Sony and Nokia (amongst others). Its services include multi-device media delivery, fast encoding and domain-based DRM.

Saffron says its will still continue supporting its clients-- and providing technology to 3rd parties-- suggesting the HTC deal is not over yet.

While aleady producing fairly impressive hardware, it's clear HTC is now going for content, required if it's to compete with the likes of Apple and RIM.
