Laplink Wants to Lead in Sync

E-mail Print PDF

You may remember Laplink who first came to the forefront with its PC migration technology in the '80s. Now Laplink wants to reinvent sync.

laplinkLaplink releases its first product based on its new technology, Laplink Switch & Sync, to make it easier to sync multiple PCs and Macs. Also included is a free transfer utility to automatically switch from a PC to a Mac (the only software of its kind, asserts Laplink.)

Laplink's new sync technology will allow users of multiple devices to automatically keep all files up-to-date over the air or across a cable-- without the limitations of a "sync container" like Dropbox or SugarSync.

Users define what to sync rather than copying files to separate folders to be shared across multiple devices.

"We have seen a boom in electronic devices over the past year and expect this trend will accelerate," says Laplink CTO Jack Wilson. "...Now we are reinventing sync for the current generation of devices and user scenarios."

To start with, supported platforms include Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7 but Laplink plans to add a universal sync function for compatibility with cameras, mp3 players and even TVs. Plus, there will be a "cloud-sync" option to provide users with even more freedom and accessibility.

As part of the launch, Laplink Switch & Sync is available for under $20 (50% discount) until July 7 at www.laplink.com. The software is also available at most major software retailers in the US, Canada and Europe.

How Many Android Tablets Out There?

E-mail Print PDF

While Google says Android devices total 135m, we don't have totals on Android tablets-- until now, as Daring Fireball's John Gruber estimates Android tablets total 1.21m.

Android tablets iPadHow did he achieve such a calculation? Google itself says 0.9% of activated in-use devices are "tablets" (as in having screens 7" or larger). Following Larry Page's announcing that Android devices now total 135m (at Google's quartely analyst call), a bit of mathematics is all that's required.

Compare this to Apple's iPad sales, now totalling 28.73m-- 24x greater than Android tablets, according to Business Insider SAI. 2011 iPad sales alone still outnumber total Android tablet sales 12:1.

The conclusion? Google and its partners need shift tablet gears, if they're to stop Apple's tablet race domination-- and hope for a repeat of Android's smartphone success.

The company will integrate GestureTek's technology into its current and next-generation Snapdragon processors which will then go into smartphones, tablets and home entertainment devices.

GestureTek will still continue its business, specifically in gesture-controlled public displays and digital signage.

Metro Group announces Media-Saturn's Q2 2011 figures-- with record losses reaching -€44m, while confirming further employee cuts for the year.

SaturnProfits for Q2 2010 total €41m.

The company says the drop in earnings is due to a strong decline in like-for-like sales (especially in Germany), together with higher operating losses in France, start-up losses in China and increasing expenses, as Media-Saturn implements its multichannel strategy.

Metro now aims for Media-Saturn's becoming Europe's online retail leader, with company forecasts predicting online sales reaching €5Bn by 2015.

Saturn.de should start operating in Germany in October 2011, and MediaMarkt.de by January 2012. Metro will also expand further on its earlier online retail purchase, redcoon.

Media-Saturn is also counting losses of another count-- employee reductions, as it plans to cut 3000 jobs Europe-wide, directly as a results of its Q2 2011 losses.

Staff reductions already started earlier this year, and will continue til 2011's end, as the company is not replacing leaving staff.

Designed for mainstream notebook computers, the new WD Scorpio Blue 1 TB hard drive utilizes 500 GB-per-platter areal density and is now available in the highest capacity for 2.5-inch hard drives in the industry-standard 9.5 mm, two-platter (2-disk) form factor.

HDDTalk cloud all you want but HDDs are still taking in the business. While the press reported Apple's philosphy is headed towards USB sticks and cloud, WD shows how the make money in HDDs.

Western Digital revenue for their Q4 (ended in June) totaled $2.4 billion and hard-drive unit shipments were 54 million. The quarterly results include expenses of $35 million associated with the acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST).

In the year-ago quarter, the company reported revenue of $2.38 billion, net income of $265 million, or $1.13 per share, and shipped 50 million hard drives.

For fiscal year 2011, the company posted revenue of $9.53 billion and net income of $726 million.

“In the June quarter, we were able to meet stronger than anticipated demand, especially from our OEM customers,” says John Coyne, president/CEO. “We believe the stronger demand was driven by increased use of sea freight in advance of the second half of the calendar year as well as supply continuity concerns in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake.

“In a challenging HDD market environment in fiscal 2011, the industry saw unit volume growth of 4% while WD achieved growth of 6%...

“We remain focused on completing our strategic acquisition of Hitachi GST...we now expect that the transaction will close in the fourth calendar quarter of 2011, and our integration planning activities continue on schedule.”
