Will Samsung Find the Right Size?

E-mail Print PDF

Galaxy PocketFact: Samsung devices come in a bewildering variety of sizes. 10.1-, 8.9-, 7- 5.2-inch... now the company adds a new size with the 2.8-inch Galaxy Pocket, a very simple handset aimed at customers with tighter pockets.

It has a basic feature set-- Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) as OS, an 832Mhz processor, 3GB internal storage (expandable via microSD card), 2MP camera, and wifi, 3G and FM radios.

So yes, it's a very average phone with the equally average (low) price of $140, making it one of the cheapest Androids out there. No doubt it is a reaction to the similar low-cost Windows Phone Tango-powered offerings from Nokia (such as the Lumia 610)...

MSI launches a range of consumer and professional all-in-one PC models at CeBIT 2012-- the Wind Top AE 1931 and AE 2211 entertainment models, and the AP16 and AP2011 business models.

All in ONe PCThe Entertainment models feature adjustable touchscreens, in either 19" (AE1931) or 22" (AE2211) sizes. Both carry Intel CPUs and include a "Fun Kit" featuring Smart Media and Smart Link functions, as well as audio and visual entertainment software.

Powering the AE2211 is a 2nd generation Intel Core processor, while the AE1931 uses a more "green" (using 20% less energy according to MSI) Atom processor.

On the business side, the AP16 is a 16" model, while the AP2011 is 20" in size. The AP16 supports fast boot from USB stick (allowing users to quickly switch between operating systems) while the AP 2011 features an adjustable stand and a LCD panel with LED backlighting.

Intel Prototypes Touchscreen Ultrabook

Intel's CeBIT 2012 stand might be mostly gamer-centric (thanks to the "Intel Extreme Masters Hall") but curious visitors can also find a pleasant surprise-- a 13.3" prototype ultrabook with a built-in touchscreen.

Intel UltrabookThe touch-enabled ultrabook carries a capacitative display and is powered by a 1.5GHz Ivy Bridge processor. Touch input works as well as any tablet, allowing one to easily navigate through the installed Zinio magazine app.

Few details are available on specifications-- the prototype has x2 USB ports, SIM and SD card slots, and a HDMI port. NFC functionality might also be on board... at least according to a piece of medical tape stuck on the prototype saying "NFC."

It uses Windows 7-- although one can easily imagine it being even better with the upcoming Windows 8. Intel does say OEM touchscreen laptop designs are already "in the pipeline," and models should hit the market by the end of 2012.

The Fujitsu CeBIT 2012 stand houses the company's second take on the ultrabook format-- the as-yet unnamed 14" Lifebook Premium clad in a handsome matte shade of red.

Lifebook PremiumThe model on show at CeBIT is a non-functional prototype, but Fujitsu says it is physically identical to the finished laptop. It has a 14" frameless display, magnesium housing and weighs 1.5kg.

It will be available in either red or silver, with a soft, fingerprint-proof finish on the the bottom. Connections should include 3G or 4G LTE together with wifi and Bluetooth, while ports include USB 3.0, HDMI and ethernet (via proprietary dongle).

Being somewhat business-oriented, the Lifebook also has a fingerprint reader with a built-in Trusted Platform Module. Shipping should start at around Q3 2012.

VLCThe Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute presents the latest developments on Visible Light Communication (VLC) at CeBiT 2012, using standard off-the-shelf LEDs to provide broadband data streams to connected devices.

The Fraunhofer system reaches maximum speeds of up 800 Mbit/s under laboratory conditions. In comparison, current broadband capacity reaces 100 Mbit/s.

As an optical technology it is also ideal for places where WLAN is not desirable (such as hospitals), and can handle all sorts of applications-- from video conferencing to general internet use.
