HTC Co-Founder Takes on VR With XRspace

The next project of former HTC CEO and co-founder Peter Chou involves virtual reality-- with the venture, dubbed XRSpace, planning to launch a standalone headset and virtual space for users to explore.

"Our mission is to bring people together through the power of 5G XR (mixed reality), surpassing the limited experience of smartphones today," Chou says. "The singular goal of XRSpace, is to take XR to the masses by redefining how people connect, socialise, and collaborate by simplifying the hardware and user experience. DJI announces a sequel to the successful Mavic Air drone-- the imaginatively named Mavic Air 2, an update promising to combine high-grade image, intuitive flight performance and "revolutionary" smart technology.

Featuring the same portable foldable design as the first model, the Mavic Air 2 weighs 570g and carries updated motors, new electronic speed controllers (ESCs) and an enhanced battery allowing for up to 34 minutes of flight. Limited 2020 Release for the PlayStation 5?

Sony insists the PlayStation 5 is still on track for a Q4 2020 release, but numbers of the machine might be limited, Bloomberg reports-- and not because of the coronavirus (aka Covid-19) pandemic is affecting production.

According to the news story, Sony plans to ship 5-6 million PS5 units by end Q1 2021, compared to the 7.5m PS4 units sold during the equivalent launch period (one involving a delayed release in Japan). However, Bloomberg says, the limited launch numbers are not due to the pandemic. Instead the main reason lies within machine itself. The PS5 is reportedly much more technically ambitious than the PS4, leading to a higher launch price and, directly, fewer early adopters.

Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Controller

Sony continues the slow drip feeding of PlayStation 5 details with the presentation of the controller-- the DualSense, a departure from the familiar DualShock clad in a striking two-tone black and white design.

According to the company, the DualSense keeps what gamers love about the DualShock 4 while adding more functionality. For instance, the controller includes haptic feedback, allowing users to feel sensations such as "the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud." Meanwhile the L2 and R2 triggers are adaptive, meaning the trigger mechanism has some measure of pressure sensitivity. The addition of such haptics necessitated a change in the angle of the triggers, as well as "subtle" updates to the grips.

Sony Details PlayStation 5 Specs

Sony follows Microsoft as reveals further specs of the upcoming PlayStation 5-- a machine based on similar AMD hardware as the Xbox Series X, if with a number of unique features and capabilities.

An in-depth livestream by lead architect Mark Cerny describes just how much of a leap the PS4 is from the PS4. Like the next-gen Xbox, the PS5 carries a 3rd generation Ryzen CPU and custom Radeon Navi CPU. The graphics processor carries 36 compute units and is capable of up to 10.28 teraflops of compute performance, making it technically less powerful than the 12-teraflop GPU inside the Xbox Series X. However Cerny insists teraflops are a "dangerous" measure of performance, and in any case a good chunk of the presentation is dedicated to to a perhaps unlikely topic, storage.
