Apple Redesigns the Mac Pro at WWDC

The 2019 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) sees the iPhone maker reveal a redesign of the Mac Pro-- one with a look reminiscent of the Power Mac G5, lovingly known as the "cheese grater."

Like the 2003 machine, the 2019 Mac Pro comes in an aluminium housing. Users can easily open it by simply twisting a built-in handle, thus revealing the internals. Apple claims the latest Mac Pro is "a modular system with extreme performance, expansion and configurability." It features workstation station-class Intel Xeon processors with up to 28 cores, memory capacity reaching 1.5TB via x12 DIMM slots, x8 PCIe slots and either AMD Radeon Pro Vega 2 or Radeon Pro Vega 2 Duo GPUs. The graphics card fit inside the MPX Module, a quad-wide PCIe card fitting two GPUs, and customers can spec the machine with a pair of Radon Pro Vega 2 cards, bringing the total of GPUs to four.

HP Updates VR Backpack PC

Computex 2019 sees HP return to the VR backpack PC concept with an update on the 2017 Omen X Compact Desktop-- the simply named VR Backpack G2, which drops the Omen branding and adds on the graphical capabilities.

Technically aimed at the enterprise market (HP points out applications such as workplace training and VR development), the VR Backpack G2 still makes an interesting showcase for free-roam VR technology. It carries an 8th generation Intel Core i7 CPU and an Nvidia 2080 GPU to deliver what HP claims are 30% better performance and 25% faster graphics, and is powered by a pair of hot-swappable batteries.

According to the company, the Intel Xeon processor provides fast and responsive performance, while the Quadro GPU carries up to 16GB GDDR5 memory and is certified to be fully compatible with most professional design applications. The chassis occupies around 50% less space compared to traditional tower workstations, yet still features "more powerful" cooling hardware for sustained performance.

ASRock Adds Z390 Motherboards
