Terahertz Radiation for Faster Memory?

Terahertz Radiation for Faster Memory?

According to research by European and Russian scientists teraherz radiation, aka "T-rays," might be the key for faster computer memory by making the switching on and off of individual memory cells even faster.

T-rays consists of short electromagnetic pulses with a wavelength of around 0.1mm (or teraherz frequencies), which allows for the inspection of organic and mechanical materials. Such properties mean T-rays find use in airport body scanners, as well as in the inspection of microchips, fragile texts and airport luggage.

Now scientists say teraherz radiation can replace the external magnetic fields currently used by memory cells in order to boost the cell-resetting process by a factor of 1000.The concept was successfully demonstrated on a weak ferromagnet, thulium ortoferrite (TmFeO3), and showed the effect of the teraherz radiation was ten times greater than that of a traditional external magnet.

Gigabyte Updates BRIX Mini-PCs

Gigabyte announces an update of the BRIX barebone mini-PC systems-- one adding a selection of 7th generation Intel Core processors in a choice of two chassis sizes.

The chassis sizes available are either 0.46L (34.4 x 112.6 x 119.4mm) or 0.6L (46.8 x 112.6 x 119.4mm).The larger option fits both a 2.5-inch drive and an M.2 SSD, while the smaller fits only an M.2 SSD. As for the processors, Gigabyte offers the Intel Core i3-7100U, Core i5-7200U or Core i7-7500U. All are 2C/4T CPUs equipped with Intel HD Graphics 620 with 300MHz base frequency (boostable to 1GHz) and support up to 32GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM via two SO-DIMM slots.

BRIX systems are VESA-mountable and come with a variety of connectivity optoins, including x1 USB-C, x1 USB 3.1, x2 USB 3.0, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort and gigabit ethernet ports. Wireless comes through dual-band wifi and Bluetooth 4.2.

Enermax Intros Revolution Duo PSU

Enermax announces the Revolution Duo-- a dual-fan PSU featuring 80 Plus certification together with active ventilation brought about through a pair of Twisted Bearing fans.

According to the company more customers are demanding dual-fan PSUs due to the increased use of shroud cases. Such cases allow for easier cable management for near and clean builds, but the confined space decreases air circulation, demanding more efficient airflow management.

The Revolution Duo has a 10cm intake fan and an 8cm exhaust fan arranged in a DuoFlow design. These promise more silent cooling performance when compared with regular single fan PSUs. In addition an FMA (Fan-speed Manual Adjustment) function allows users to set optimal cooling, and the two thermal-controlled fans can automatically adjust speeds according to system conditions.

The Palm-Size Racing P1 Mini PC

Component maker Biostar announces a mini PC-- the Racing P1, a machine around the size of three smartphone stacked on top of each other based on the 14nm Intel Atom Z8350 CPU.

First seen back at Computex 2016, the Racing P1 measures 129 x 83 x 27mm and has a fanless design offering silent operation. Construction is in carbon fibre with "sports car curves," and while customers can hide the machine behind a display via VESA-compatible mounts one can add a spot of flash through RGB LEDs and a 5V LED Header for the addition of LED strips controllable via Vivd LED DJ software.

The Silent Loop AiO Liquid Cooler

German PC component vendor be quiet! launches a first water cooling product-- the Silent Loop, an all-in-one liquid cooler featuring a full copper radiator, Pure Wings 2 PWM fans and flexible bend-protected tubes.

According to the company the Silent Loop is both quiet and vibration free thanks to "unique reverse-flow pump technology" consisting of a decoupled pump reversing the cooling circuit. Essentially the system draws liquid from the outside over the cold plate before transporting it through a second layer on the inside of the radiator. The pump operates at 2200 revolutions per minutes, producing less vibrations than other AiO liquid coolers on the market.

In Win Launches 509 Full Tower Chassis

Computer chassis maker In Win presents the 509 Full Tower PC Chassis-- a chassis featuring an edge to edge tempered glass panel on the left side and an interesting honeycomb mesh vented design on the right.

Designed for gaming PCs, the 509 comes in both standard and ROG-certified livery. The honeycomb design provides both visual appeal and cooling, together with the vents/perforations on the underside and back. Further cooling comes through 4 areas for the mounting of 360mm radiators (front, sides and middle), with the front space fitting both a triple fan radiator and a pump/reservoir combo.

Users not wanting liquid cooling can use the multifunction brackets to fit 120mm fans or 2.5-inch SSDs.
