LG G7 to Get ThinQ AI

Details on the next LG flagship smartphone, the G7, are thin on the ground, but the Korean company does have one announcement ahead of the 2 May 2018 reveal-- the addition of ThinQ "Empathic AI."

ThinQ is the LG brand of artificial intelligence technology. It combines voice control with "vision AI" able to enhance camera functionality. It was first seen earlier this year in the V30S, and the version found in the G7 should see improvements making capable of human-like thinking. Or so LG claims, at any rate.

Three Cameras for the Huawei P20 Pro

Huawei takes to Paris to present the P20 Pro-- a flagship addition to the P20 smartphone line featuring a rear-facing camera with not one, not two, but three lenses.

The result, according to the camera, is an optically-stabilised telephoto camera with either 3x optical or 5x hybrid zoom. One lens is telephoto and snaps with an 8MP sensor, another features a 40MP colour sensor and the final lens provides 20MP monochrome data. Once a photo is taken the phone combines the data from the 3 sensors into a single 10MP shot using a technique Huawei calls "Light Fusion."

BlackBerry Licenses Security Tech

BlackBerry might have stopped making hardware, but it remains a presence in mobile device software as it licenses its security technology to 3rd party hardware makers, most recently to Swiss CE maker Punkt Tronics.

The first such deal involving BlackBerry security technology was signed back in September 2017 with Chinese company NDT. The licensing program is known as BlackBerry Secure, and allows companies to leverage BlackBerry security credentials without hiding own branding. As a result, Punkt can now make a Punkt-branded devices that simply says "BlackBerry Secure" during startup.

HMD Brings Nokia Matrix Phone Back

Nearly 20 years ago, the Wachowski siblings wowed the world with The Matrix, the seminal science fiction film starring Keanu Reeves and, in a small yet critical role, the Nokia 8110. And now it's back at MWC 2018, as HMD announces a 4G update of the "banana" phone.

Released back in 1996, the 8110 was, of course, most famous for the spring-loaded slider-- it is the chief reason it was Neo's phone of choice, after all (that, and Nokia was the biggest phone maker at the time). The 2018 update retains the mechanism, as well as the bright yellow colour that garnered it the "banana" nickname. The black colour seen in The Matrix remains an option, though.

Samsung Intros Galaxy S9

Samsung maintains the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tradition as it presents the latest Galaxy smartphone-- the S9 and S9+, a handset featuring what the company claims is the most advanced camera yet.

The S9 should be very familiar to S8 owners, since it features the same 18.5.9 format display, curved sides and glass front and back. The display uses a 2960 1440 resolution Super AMOLED panel, and measures 5.8-inch in the S9 and 6.2-inch in the S9+. A lot of other hardware features remain identical, such as the 3.5mm jack and hardware buttons, including the one used to summon the unloved Bixby assistant.

One notable change from the previous generation is the location of the fingerprint scanner, since it has been moved to below the camera. Another is the speakers, which Samsung claims are stereo, offer 40% louder sound and come complete with Dolby Atmos audio. Inside the IP68-rated body are a Snapdragon 845 processor (or the latest Exynox chipset in some territories), 4/6GB RAM, 64GB storage, microSD slot and 3000/3500mAh battery with fast charging.
