BlackBerry's Phablet Passport

At the BlackBerry fiscal Q1 2015 earnings call CEO John Chen reveals a take on the phablet format, one that's possibly the struggling mobile vendor's oddest handset yet-- the BlackBerry Passport, a square QWERTY device.

As seen at the presentation the device is an angular, blocky number with a hardware keyboard crammed beneath a 4.5-inch 1440 x 1440 resolution display. Originally code-named "Windemere", little is known on its hardware specifications, but rumours suggest it carries a Snapdragon processor, Adreno 330 graphics, 3GB RAM and a 3450mAh battery.

Reports also suggest one can trace gestures on the rather cramped-looking keyboard.

Amazon (Finally) Reveals Fire Phone

After much rumour and hearsay Amazon unveils its first attempt at smartphones-- the Fire Phone, a 4.7-inch number featuring a glasses-free 3D display of sorts… and a means of encouraging customer showrooming.

The holographic display uses 4 face-tracking cameras (one in each corner of the device) and a "Dynamic Perspective" sensor to provide images with depth. The system also powers some interesting UI tricks, as one can simply tilt the device to scroll through websites or navigate between menus.

However the Fire Phone's most touted feature is not actually hardware-based. With the press of a dedicated button customers can use the smartphone's 13MP camera to identify text, barcodes and QR codes, as well as movies, TV shows, songs, and a bevy of products of the household, books and games variety.

LG Intros G3 Flagship

LG has not one, not two but six launch events for the successor to its G2 smartphone flagship-- the G3, a handset the company says "redefine[s] the definition of global smartphone for global customers."

A device that's nearly all screen (thanks to impressively thin bezels), the G3 features a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 IPS display within brushed metal-effect plastic casing. The back is slightly curved, and the LG's unusual rear key returns in a smaller and flatter version sitting just beneath the camera.

Inside are a quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage (expandable to 128GB via microSD card), 3000mAH removable battery and a 13MP rear-facing camera armed with a "revolutionary" laser auto focus claiming focusing speeds of 0.276 seconds.

Huawei takes another stab at high-end Android smartphones with the Ascend P7, a successor to the P6 featuring a 5-inch 1920x1080 display, 4G LTE connectivity and a 1.8GHz quad-core CPU.

According to the company, the device features a 7-layer surface treatment on the back for a "high-quality look and feel" and a "luxurious metallic appearance and exquisite micro pattern."

One feature Huawei insists on touting is the front-facing camera-- an 8MP number with a non-spherical lens and a panorama function for better, err, panoramic and group selfies (or "groufies"). Users can even take selfie videos at 1080p resolution, a "beauty" mode includes 10 level auto-facial enhancement and users even get a bulit-in mirror function and a selfie preview window.
