Netbooks vs Tablets: The Market Winner is...

Tablet shipments beat netbook shipments for the first time in Q2 2011, according to ABI Research-- with tablet shipments reaching 13.6M units, compared to 7.3M netbooks.

The analyst says Q1 2011 netbook shipments reach 8.4M, while tablet units number 6.4M.

“This is a trend that we do not expect will reverse,” ABI says, describing the shift in shipment numbers as "changing of leadership for the most interesting device type," rather than direct market cannibalisation.

Guess who was following the HP fire sale? Motorola was, as it launches the Xoom Family Edition-- a Best Buy exclusive selling for $379.

The only differences between the "new" model and the regular Xoom are less storage (the Family Edition has 16GB instead of 32GB) and a collection of pre-loaded apps.

Amazon: a Cheap Tablet to Kindle Online Sales

IHS iSuppli reports Amazon will sell the new Kindle Fire tablet at a "razor-thin margin on sales" of both devices and digital content-- in order to promote physical product sales from the Amazon online store.

The analyst estimates the Kindle Fire costs around $192 to make, with additional manufacturing expenses rising the total price to $209.63. The device itself will cost $199 on shelves.
