Gartner: 2018 PC Shipments Down -1.3%

Global PC shipments total 68.6 million units in Q4 2018, Gartner reports-- a -4.3% Y-o-Y decline. Meanwhile shipments for full-year 2018 are down by -1.3% to "surpass" 259.4m, marking a 7th consecutive year of global PC shipment decline.

“Just when demand in the PC market started seeing positive results, a shortage of CPUs (central processing units) created supply chain issues. After two quarters of growth in 2Q18 and 3Q18, PC shipments declined in the fourth quarter,” the analyst says. “The impact from the CPU shortage affected vendors’ ability to fulfill demand created by business PC upgrades. We expect this demand will be pushed forward into 2019 if CPU availability improves.”

Also affecting the PC market are uncertainties of both political and economic factors in some countries. Even the US sees some uncertainty, despite a strong overall economy, among vulnerable buyer groups such as SMBs. Consumer demand also remains weak throughout the holiday season, marking holiday sales as a non-driver for overall consumer PC demand.

A PC For Flight Simulation

Customers with a penchant for flight simulators might be interested in the Honeycomb by Maingear-- a desktop PC built by Maingear in collaboration with Honeycomb, maker of professional-grade flight simulators.

While a niche interest, flight simulators maintain an active community, despite the perhaps untimely death of Microsoft Flight Simulator. The more complex sims even find use in actual pilot training! The Honeycomb by Maingear appears ideal for such purposes, since it features triple monitor support and a built-in USB hub for the connection of multiple peripherals, such as a yoke, throttle, rudder pedals and panels.

IDC: Notebooks as

According to IDC, 2018 shipments of personal computing devices (bringing together both traditional PCs and tablets) are down by -3.9%, and are set to continue dropping at a CAGR of -1.8% to reach 378.3 million units by 2022.

The latest forecast updates a number of assumptions to reflect areas of both growth and concern. For instance tablets, once seen as the biggest threat to notebooks, see "disappointing" numbers in Q3 2018. Slate tablets are expected to shrink over the 5-year forecast with a CAGR of -5.8%, while detachables see slightly better numbers thanks to interest from verticals such as education and finance.

Asus ROG Presents Strix Radeon RX 590 GPU

Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) announces the Strix Radeon RX 590-- a gaming graphics card based on the AMD Radeon RX 590 GPU promising advanced cooling, ultrafast performance and, as demanded by gamer customers, customisable lighting.

ROG Strix cards feature what the company calls MaxContact technology, a means to create a heatspreader surface making up to x2 more contact with the GPU chip, improving thermal contact. As heat passes the heatsink, 3 fans start spinning when GPU temperatures exceed 55°C. The fans feature a patented wing design promising up to 105% more static pressure compared to traditional axial designs, while the internals are sealed to IP5X standards to ensure operation in dusty environments.

A Smaller Raspberry Pi With the Model A+

The Raspberry Pi Foundation announces what is essentially a smaller and lower-cost version of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ micro-PC-- the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, a Raspberry Pi on a smaller printed circuit board and some cut features.

The Model A+ runs on the same quad-core 1.4GHz Broadcom processor as the Model B+, and also features Bluetooth 4.2 and 2.4/5GHz wifi. However it lacks an ethernet port, RAM is down from 1GB to 512MB and it has just x1 USB 2.0 port instead of x4. That said, the Model A+ still promises improved thermal management, and the board is certified as a radio module under FCC rules.
