The Slimmer SilverStone FN124 Fan

Compact PC chassis specialist SilverStone announces a 120mm fan design-- the FN124, with a reduced profile just 15mm thick. In comparison, regular chassis fans are usually around 25mm thick.

According to the company, the slimline design allows use in smaller case designs. The fan blades are optimised for balanced air pressure and airflow, while an air-inlet with optimised aerodynamics reduces noisy air turbulence. Performance tops at 1500 rpm, producing 25.06CFM of airflow and static pressure of 0.86 H2O. Noise levels are 18dBA and the expected lifetime reaches 40000 hours.

The Next Mini-Console is... the PC?

With just about every console from the 80s and 90s getting a shrunken-down version, the announcement of yet another machine of the sort should come to no surprise-- unless it happens to be PC Classic, a tiny take on, well, the PC.

Made by Maryland-based Unit-e Technologies, the PC Classic in the least has the look down, with a cheerfully beige plastic shell complete with "cooling vents" and even what looks like a little 5.25-inch style drive. The little drive takes SD cards, and beneath it are a pair of USB ports for controllers or input peripherals. The unit connects to TVs or monitors via HDMI or composite video out, and the back hides another USB port. Bluetooth connectivity is also included.

IDC: Commercial Renewals Keep EMEA PCs Stable

The EMEA traditional PC (covering desktops, notebooks and workstations) market is "stable" in Q3 2018, IDC reports-- shipments total 18.1 million units, a 0.5% Y-o-Y increase brought about by ongoing commercial renewals.

The commercial segment is up by 4.9% Y-o-Y, the result of continued Windows 10 adoption. In contrast, consumer space remains negative with a -4.1% Y-o-Y decline, with drops in both desktops and notebooks. Desktops are down for the first time in 2018 (-2.4% Y-o-Y), if with growth in commercial space. In the meantime notebook performance remains stable (1.4% Y-o-Y), as mobility adoption and renewals drive commercial demand.

Traditional PC shipments in W. Europe see 2% Y-o-Y growth thanks to strong commercial shipments (8.3% Y-o-Y) offsetting consumer decline (-5.5% Y-o-Y). The main reason of the overall consumer decline is primarily desktops, even if notebooks are also down, if at a softer rate. On the commercial side, ongoing device renewals in midmarket space and growing Windows 10 adoption continues to drive growth. Education surely also contributed to such growth, what with Q3 2018 being the back-to-school quarter.

IDC: Lenovo Leads in Q3 2018 PCs

According to IDC, Q3 2018 traditional PC (desktop, notebook and workstation) shipments total 67.4 million units-- a -0.9% Y-o-Y decline, down from the growth of Q2 2018 but still an improvement over previous analyst forecasts of a -3% Y-o-Y drop.

The PC market has been trending towards stabilisation since 2017, and even reached actual growth in Q2 2018. Demand from mature regions remains key to the market, but many emerging markets have to deal with unfavourable currency headwinds, as well as other politico-economic factors. In addition, Q3 2018 had processor shortages, even if most top OEMs managed to fulfill a "sizable" portion of demand and outperform the market.

Driving Q3 2018 are pockets of strong demand, as well as an increase in inventory ahead of further supply issues and expected price hikes. The EMEA market shows "flattish" results, with ongoing mobility demand leading to slightly stronger notebook performance compared to desktops. The aforementioned component shortages do dampen overall growth, despite strong commercial demand.
