The Smallest Surface Yet

Microsoft confirms rumours of a smaller Surface tablet as it announces the Surface Go-- a smaller and lower cost Surface device featuring a 10-inch screen and a Pentium Gold 4415Y processor.

The Go might be smaller, but it retains all core features of the Surface line, including the 3:2 display aspect ratio (1800 x 1200 resolution), built-in kickstand, 5MP front-facing camera with facial recognition login, 8MP rear-facing camera and the Connector port for charging and connecting to a dock. On the tech spec side it is something of a downgrade though, with 4/8GB RAM, 64/128GB storage and reduced battery life (around 9 hours).

Microsoft Working on Dual-Screen Surface Device?

A tweet by Microsoft Surface chief Panos Panay reignites rumours the company is working on a "new and disruptive" device-- one, according to the The Verge, is a "folding, dual-display device" produced in collaboration with LG Display.

The idea of a Microsoft dual-screen device has been around for years. In 2010, a group of Microsoft engineers lead by then Xbox lead J Allard pushed the Courier, a Windows-based dual-screen tablet complete with stylus one could fold and carry around like a notebook. The Courier was killed off (reportedly because it failed to align with the Windows and Office franchises), but the concept persisted within Microsoft.

Qualcomm Preps More PC-Focused Snapdragon Chips?

Rumours emerge on the successor of the Snapdragon 850, the PC-focused Qualcomm chipset-- WinFuture.de claims to have details on the Snapdragon 1000, a chip designed for Windows 10 laptops.

The recently announced Snapdragon 850 promises to bring smartphone-style features to laptops, such as always-on LTE or wifi connections ensuring users receive notifications and have data always synced while on the go. According to the reports the Snapdragon 1000 is an even more powerful laptop chip, one aimed to rival the likes of the Intel Y- and U-series Core processors with a power draw reaching 6.5W. In comparison, the Y- and U-series chips have a power draw of 4.5 and 15W respectively.

Xiaomi announces the next device in the Mi Pad Android tablet line-- the Mi Pad 4, an 8-inch device featuring a Snapdragon 660 chipset, 6000mAh battery and a 5MP front-facing camera with facial recognition capability.

As an upgrade on the previous Mi Pad 4 has a slimmer design even if the display gets something of a downgrade from 2048 x 1536 resolution to 1920 x 1080. The internals however get a boost, with 3/4GB LDDR4x RAM, 32/64GB internal storage (expandable via microSD card) and f/2.0 13MP front-facing camera.

Samsung Upgrades Chromebook Plus

Samsung announces the Chromebook Plus (V2)-- the second generation Chromebook Plus featuring upgrades such as a second camera and a switch from ARM-based processor to an Intel option.

The Chromebook Plus (V2) keeps the same form factor as the first model, with a hinge allowing users to switch from notebook to tablet mode. The 12.2-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution touchscreen handles pen input via built-in stylus, and Samsung promises "all day" battery life on a single charge. The company increased the number of cameras to 2, with a 1MP front-facing number and a 13MP rear-facing camera usable whenever the device is in tablet mode.

Asus Replaces Zenbook Pro Touchpad With Touchscreen

Asus launches the next ZenBook device at Computex 2018-- the ZenBook Pro, a notebook featuring a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution touchscreen dubbed the "ScreenPad" instead of the regular touchpad.

As the company puts it, the ScreenPad is similar to the touchbar found in the most recent Apple MacBooks. It shows adaptive menus and controls depending to the app in use and is large enough to run full apps, including a calculator, music player, numeric keypad and app launcher. In addition, Asus says the display should also handle browser extensions, such as YouTube controls.

But what about the rest of the notebook? The ZenBook Pro comes in two sizes, 15.6-inch with a 4K display (UX580) and 14-inch with an Ergo Lift hinge able to lift the keyboard for a better typing angle (UX480). The UX580 offers a range of specs, with either 8th generation Intel Core i5, Core i7 or even Core i9 processor, GeForce 1050 Ti graphics and up to 16GB RAM. Meanwhile the UX480 carries up to a Core i7 CPU, 16GB RAM and Nvidia Max-Q-enabled GTX 1050 graphics.

HP Intros Omen 15 Gaming Laptop

HP announces an addition to the Omen laptop lineup at the HP Gaming Festival in Beijing, China-- an update on the Omen 15, a notebook the company describes as "faster, smaller and more powerful than ever."

The Omen 15 offers a 15.6-inch display in either 144Hz 1080p or 60Hz 4K flavours, together with an 8th generation Intel Core i5+/i7+ CPU with up to 6 cores, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics, up to 32GB DDR4 RAM and SSD, HDD, SSD+HDD and HDD+Intel Optane storage options. It is also smaller than the previous model, since it weighs 2.5kg, and and comes inside a metal chassis.

The event also has HP unveil a number of gaming accessories. These include the Sequencer, a keyboard featuring optical-mechanical Blue switch technology the company claims are 10x faster than traditional switchers. Also included in the keyboard are a roller bar, dedicated media keys and RGB LED lighting users can control via Omen Command Centre software.

Razer Updates Blade Laptop

Razer presents the next model in the Blade gaming laptop range-- the Blade 15, an update on the Razer 14 the company claims is "the world's smallest 15.6-inch gaming laptop."

The Blade 15 features a chassis CNC milled out of a single block of aluminium. It measures 355 x 235 x 16.8mm, weighs around 2kg (depending on configuration) and carries a range of specifications, including 8th Gen an Intel Core i7-8750H (6C/12T with base 2.2GHz and boost of 4.1GHz) CPU and either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or GeForce GTX 1070 (8GB) GPU.

Further specifications include 16GB of 2667MHz dual-channel system memory and up to 512GB PCIe SSD storage (with support for up to 32GB RAM and 2TB storage). Connectivity comes through Intel Wireless-AC 9260 (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, and Bluetooth 5, Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), USB 3.1 port x3 (SuperSpeed), Mini DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 audio and video output. An 80Wh Li-Po battery comes installed.

Asus quietly launches the ZenBook Pro 15 UX550GD-- a laptop "designed to entice, and crafted to perform" through a choice of up to 6C/12T Intel CPU and 15-inch display.

Customers get a choice of Intel Core i5-8300H CPU with 4C/8T running at up to 4GHz, i7-8750H with 6C/12T running at up to 4.1GHz or an i9-8950HK with 6C/12T and running at up to 4.5GHz, with 8, 9, and 12MB of cache respectively. The 3 models ship with an Nvidia GTX 1050 GPU with 4GB GDDR5 memory as standard, and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD storage and 8/16GB 2400MHz DDR4 memory.
