NFC Forum Takes on Wireless Charging

E-mail Print PDF

The NFC Forum, the organisation behind Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, approves and a Wireless Charging specification (WLC) allowing charging through the wireless standard.

NFC wireless chargingThe the WLC users will be able to wirelessly charge small, battery-powered consumer and IoT devices at a power transfer rate of up to 1W, all using a single antenna in an NFC-enabled device. Such devices will still be able to communicate using the same antenna, and the solution should make it easier to charge low-power devices such as wearables and digital pens.

“The NFC Forum’s Wireless Charging Technical Specification allows for wireless charging of small battery-powered devices like those found in many of the estimated 36 billion IoT devices in use today,” the organisation says. “NFC wireless charging is truly transformative because it changes the way we design and interact with small, battery-powered devices as the elimination of plugs and cords enables the creation of smaller, hermetically-sealed devices.”

The WLC standard has just been published, and as such it will take at least a couple of years before implementation starts taking place.
