GoPro updates its action camera offering for 2019 with a choice of two models-- the Hero8 Black, a sequel to the 2018 Hero 7 offering improved video stabilisation, and the dual-lens Max capable of shooting 360-degree video.

GoPro 2019 cameraThe Hero8 Black looks very similar to the previous model. It shoots 4K video at 60fps, and includes software features such as HyperSmooth 2.0 video stabilisation, TimeWarp 2.0 speed auto-adjustments, SuperPhoto for more clear HDR action photos and LiveBurst, a means to capture 1.5 seconds of 12MP footage. It also promises better audio through a wind-optimised front-facing microphone, while digital lenses come in 4 flavours ranging from SuperView to zero-distortion linear.

One interesting addition to the Hero8 Black is Mods-- a modular accessory system allowing customers to easily build on the action camera. For instance, the Media Mod adds a directional microphone, two cold shoe mounts and USB-C, HDMI and 3.5mm adapters. The Display Mod is a 1.9-inch display one sticks on top of the Media Mod, while the Light Mod is a waterproof (up to 10m), wearable and gear-mountable light.

Customers wanting a 360-degree GoPro camera get the Max, a waterproof (up to 5m) dual-lens camera with features such as HyperSmooth, TimeWarp and SuperView. GoPro offers means to easily edit 360-degree video with the addition of a Reframe feature in the companion app. Rounding out the camera are a choice of 4 digital lenses, front-facing touchscreen for easy framing and x6 microphones for shotgun-mic performance.

The GoPro Hero8 Black and Max cameras are available by end October 2019, with the Mods to follow on December.
