Toshiba announces the addition of 16TB helium-sealed models to both N300 NAS HDD and X300 Performance HDD series at IFA 2019, an upgrade over previous 14TB models that also boosts the buffer from 256 to 512MiB.

Toshiba 16TB drivesAimed at performance, gaming and small business NAS applications, the 16TB N300 and X300 HDDs use a 9-disk helium-sealed design. According to the company it brings an increase in storage density with a lower operating power profile. Laser wielding technology and case design keep the helium securely sealed within a standard 3.5-inch enclosure.

The N300 series is aimed at home office and small business NAS and private cloud storage, with support for up to 8 bays. Designed for 24/7 operation, the drives feature a workload rating of up to 180TB/year, 7200rpm performance and integrated sensors to compensate the effect of rotational vibrations. Meanwhile the X300 series is designed for PC and high-end workstations, with 7200rpm performance, drive stabilisation technologies and Toshiba cache technology promising to optimise cache allocation in real-time during read/write for high-level performance.

Both 16TB N300 and X300 models should be available from Q4 2019.
