AMD announces the availability of the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X-- a 16-core CPU aimed at high-end desktops, complete with faster clock speeds than previous AMD CPUs and overclocking capabilities.

Threadripp 2950XThe 2950X is based on 2nd generation Ryzen architecture, updated Precision Boost and Extended Frequency Range (XFR) technologies allowing for higher clock speeds reaching 3.5GHz, with a 4.4GHz boost. It consists of a pair of 8-core Zen+ dies fabbed using the GlobalFoundries 12LP process on a single piece of substrate, and includes 32MB cache, quad-channel DDR4-2933 memory subsystem and 60 PCIe Gen 3 lanes.

A TDP of 180W makes the processor compatible with all AMD X288-based platforms with sTR4 sockets. Customers planning to overclock the 2950X should pair it with motherboards with high-quality VRMs and more robust cooling systems, since the TDP can go beyond the regular power envelope.

The Ryzen Threadripper 2950X is available now.
