A Seagate Battery/HDD Combo for VR

E-mail Print PDF

Seagate joins forces with HTC to launch the VR Power Drive-- a hybrid of power bank and portable HDD designed for use with VR hardware, such as HTC's own standalone Vive Focus.

Seagate VR Power DriveThe VR Power Drive carries a 5000mAh battery together with a 1000GB HDD. It connects to headsets via built-in micro USB cable and USB-C adapter, allowing users to access media content without need for a PC. It is also compatible with mobile devices, acting as both media storage and power bank for smartphones or tablets. A detachable belt clip makes the drive wearable.

However the device does have one weakness-- it is not able to offer power and storage access simultaneously. Instead, users have to switch between one function and the other through a switch.

“As VR users become more mobile and smart phone users consume more rich media, the two things they both need are longer battery life and larger storage,” HTC says. “The Seagate VR Power Drive is the perfect device to serve this need. Doubling battery life while putting hundreds of high-resolution movies in your pocket are benefits every modern user can see value in. This is just the beginning of a long and fruitful cooperation.”

The two companies are still to announce when the VR Power Drive hits the market, but it will probably do so around the Q3 2018 launch of the Vive Focus.
