Razer Presents Huntsman Elite Keyboard

Razer launches the Huntsman Elite-- a flagship gaming keyboard featuring the company's own branded "Opto-Mechanical" switches promising both more speed and durability compared to other switches.

Opto-mechanical swtiches are based on breaking an IR beam when a key is pressed. According to Razer, this principle makes for a simpler construction than traditional mechanical keys, since they do not have the physical characteristics causing problems in traditional mechanical switch designs. In addition, the opto-mechanical switch has a 1.5mm actuation point, allowing for a 30% speed increase, while actuation force is at a light 45g. Each switch has a metal key stabiliser bar, and is rated for up to 100 million keystrokes.

First Semisolid Lithium Batteries to Arrive in Drones

Startup SolidEnergy Systems sets to be the first company to start selling solid-state lithium batteries promising to provide twice the energy of conventional lithium-ion batteries without the risk of bursting into flames.

Lithium-ion batteries pack a powerful blend of capacity and long cycle life, but the use of a flammable liquid electrolyte (a dilute mixture of lithium salts) has lead to injuries, product recalls and flight bans. Solid-state batteries use an inert solid, such as plastic or ceramic, instead of the liquid electrolytes, making them safer and, thanks to support for a pure lithium anode, boast higher energy density.

However, while the technology is promising, solid-state lithium batteries have a problem-- the lithium anodes tend to grow "dendrites," whisker-like structures that can reach the cathode and short the battery. SolidEnergy claims to solve the issue through coating the pure lithium foil anode with a mixed polymer-ceramic electrolyte. In addition, the cathode gets another electrolyte, a paste of lithium salts solvent enough to conduct ions at room temperature.

Xbox to Get Keyboard and Mouse Support?

According to both Windows Central and The Verge, Microsoft is working with Razer to enable keyboard and mouse support on the Xbox, with said support covering the RGB lighting found in Razer peripherals.

Windows Central says Microsoft briefed developers on the upcoming support earlier this year through a presentation detailing how to enable the RGB lighting in Razer Chroma devices. Such lighting can prove useful for gamers, since it provides visual cues for ability cooldowns in titles such as Overwatch. In addition, the presentation points out rules and guidance on the implementation of mouse and keyboard support for Xbox, such as the fact Xbox games still need to support gamepads and how the console can only handle one mouse and keyboard.
