IFA Reveal for Galaxy Gear, Note 3

Samsung finally reveals its foray into smartwatch territory-- the company reveals the Galaxy Gear, as well as the 3rd iteration of the Galaxy Note phablet, at the Samsung Unpacked IFA 2013 event.

Looking like a chunky plastic wristwatch, the Galaxy Gear pairs with Samsung smartphones via Bluetooth 4.0 + BLE. It provides previews of incoming messages and emails, as well as "other valuable features and commands" (as Samsung puts it) such as pedometer, Find My Device (finds a lost phone from 1.5m away), compatibility with 70 Android apps (including Pocket, Evernote, RunKeeper and Runtastic), camera and, shockingly enough, a digital timepiece. Shocking.

Inside the Gear are a 1.63-inch 320x320 Super AMOLED display, 800MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4G storage and a 315mAh battery promising "about a day" of use.

While the decision to use Bluetooth 4.0 allows for less drain on the battery, it also cripples the Gear-- the device is only compatible with the newly announced Galaxy Note 3 (more on that below) and the 2014 edition Galaxy Note 10.1 on launch. It will eventually pair with the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II, but only following an eventual software update.

The Thinnest Touch Surface Yet

British wireless technology specialist CSR claims it developed the thinnest touch interface yet-- a paper-thin (0.5mm) wireless device able to turn any area into a touch surface.

The surface is both lightweight and flexible, meaning OEMs can integrate it into protective covers or provide larger desktop touch zones. It can also act as a super-slim keyboard or detect handwriting or sketches via modified pen, with touch latency of just 12 milliseconds.

Handling wireless connectivity is a CSR1010 chip, a Bluetooth Smart development from CSR allowing it to connect to iOS and Windows 8 devices using a "fraction" of the power standard Bluetooth demands.

A Wireless Mouse for Gamers

Logitech claims the G602 wireless gaming mouse allows for up to 250 hours of "non-stop lag-free wireless gameplay," as well as Delta Zero sensor technology for more precise boss domination.

"When you look at the wireless gaming mice out there their primary flaw is the uncertainty of having to interrupt your game to replace batteries," the company says. "We wanted to bring gamers an innovation that would change the face of wireless gaming forever."

As well as record battery life the G602 also features durable design with mechanical switches (rated at 20 million-click lifespan) and 11 programmable controls.

Wireless connectivity comes through USB dongle.

The Mouse That Roared

What does it take to succeed in accessories? What does it take for a distributor to turn manufacturer and build its own range of best-selling accessories?

We interviewed Paulius Paršeliūnas, General Manager of ACME Europe (photo below).

ACME started life as a distributor in 1993 and in 2012 ACME Group turnover reached 204,5 million euro, including exports to 36 countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa. Today the ACME brand of accessories is winning European awards and expected to grow to one-third of the Group’s business.

To succeed in accessories, it’s clear you need a Big Hit. You need a winning product that earns public and press attention; one that roars out for reviews and awards and calls attention to the rest of the range-- and for ACME, that winner is the first of ACME’s new Urban harmony range of products: the PEANUT mouse.

As the name “PEANUT” suggests, it is not physical size that makes this an award-winning product…it’s the concept and design that wins over users.

“An absolute success,” declares Paršeliūnas. “At first we won national Lithuanian awards and after that international competitions such as “Plus X Award 2012” and “iF Product Design Award 2013” gave us either commendations or awards.”

A Light Harmonic PC DAC

Light Harmonic (maker of the starship-esque Da Vinci digtal-to-analog converter (DAC)) goes for something smaller and cheaper with the Geek, a portable DAC the size of a USB thumb drive.

The Geek promises to give PC audio "more detail, greater depth, stronger bass and dynamics” by replacing built-in soundcards. It plugs into USB ports, drives 2 pairs of headphones or speakers, and supports high-resolution audio formats up to and including 384kHz PCM files.

Light Harmonic also claims the Geek is the first portable DAC able to process DSD and double-DSD files.
