For 2009, the netbook industry will take up 17.2% of the “NotePC” market. Although there were pioneers in the small format like Dialogue’s high end Flybook, Taiwan's ASUSTek cracked the market wide open in Q4 2007 with a price-sensitive unit. Until then, smaller and lighter meant more expensive to the PC industry.
Netbook shipments in 2008 hit 14.6 million units after only a year in the market. Now the netbook is expected to reach 26.3 million in shipments—despite a global recession. Acer and ASUSTek recorded more than 70% market share in 2008 and their high market share will continue in 2009, perhaps falling slightly to 67%.
