Nvidia reveals more details on its next step towards a complete tablet strategy-- Tegra Note, the Tegra 4-powered successor to the Project Kai low-cost tablet reference design.

Tegra NoteFirst seen at Computex, Tegra Note promises to allow vendors to make Android tablets "packed with innovation and features" with a pricetag of $199. Such tablets would include a 7-inch 1280x800 IPS display, front-facing speakers, 16GB storage (expandable via microSD slot) and the Tegra 4 SoC packing a quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU, GeForce GPU, DirectStylus input technology and Chimera imaging architecture.

Further additions include the TegraZone game store and the SmugMug Camera Awesome photography app, and Nvidia says it will take care of over-the-air software updates.

The first Tegra Note tablets should appear on October 2013 from the likes of EVGA, PNY, ZOTAC and Shenzhen-- all small regional low-cost device makers, meaning Nvidia is adopting the approach that made its fortunes in the consumer PC graphics card business.

Further Tegra 4-based offerings should also show up from HP, Asus, Toshiba, Kobo and Xiami.
