VESA Finalises DisplayPort 1.4

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) finalises version 1.4 of the DisplayPort (DP) standard-- a first major update since 2014's version 1.3 featuring Display Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2 technology.

DSC 1.2 enables display resolutions reaching 5120x2880 (5k)@60Hz wigh high dynamic range (HDR), as well as 8K (7680x4320)@60Hz in both HDR and standard modes. In addition it handles Deep Colour 120Hz 4K panels, and provides HD video with 32-channel audio.

“This significant update to the DisplayPort standard is vital to continued growth of adoption for both DP and DSC, particularly in such fast-growing markets as digital television and automotive infotainment,” VESA says. “New applications are demanding displays with better resolution, wider color gamut, and increased dynamic range. We believe the tools provided in this new DP standard release will enable a quantum leap forward in display quality, which leverage DSC compression along with transport of high-quality audio and video content.”

Samsung Adds FreeSync Over HDMI to Curved Monitors

Samsung announces the CF591 and CF390-- a pair of curved monitors featuring FreeSync Over HDMI, making them ideal for gamers and professionals wanting a tear- and stuttering-free visual experience.

FreeSync is an AMD technology syncing display refresh rates with game or video content framerates, thus eliminating tearing effects caused by fixed monitor refresh rates or V-Sync-related stuttering. The technology was initially limited to monitors with DisplayPort connectivity, before AMD opened it to HDMI back in December 2015.

VESA Updates Display Stream Compression Standard

The Video Electronics Association (VESA) releases version 1.2 of the Display Stream Compression (DSC) standard, developed to support a wider range of display applications.

It is aimed primarily at externally connected displays (such as PC monitors and TVs) and provides native compression of the YCbCr 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 video formats commonly used in digital TVs. It also handles up to 16 bits per colour (DSC 1.1 supports only 8, 10 and 12 bits per colour) and High Dynamic Range (HDR).

Asus Presents USB-C Portable Monitor

Asus has many products on show at CES 2016, but one display stands to attention-- the MB169C+, a portable 15.6-inch monitor the company says is the first to use a USB-C connection for both power and video transmission.

The monitor weighs just 800g, is 8.5mm thick and features a 1980x1080 resolution IPS panel. The USB-C cable makes it compatible the likes of the Apple MacBook, Google Chromebook Pixel and Samsung Galaxy TabPro S, as well as any future devices featuring the latest USB standard.

LG Previews CES 2016 Monitors, Laptop

LG presents the monitors it will showcase at CES 2016, including 21:9 UltraWide and 4K gaming models, as well as the gram 15-- a 15.6-inch laptop the company says is "barely larger" than a conventional 14-inch laptop.

One setup seen at the show features the 34-inch 21:9 Curved UltraWide (model 34UC98), a 3440x1440 monitor complete with image-enhancing IPS technology designed to cater for both digital media professionals and gamers with a "well-rounded multimedia experience). Gamers wanting monitors with AMD FreeSync technology get the 34UC88 21:9 Curved UltraWide and the 27UD68 UHD/4K displays, while the 24UM88 21:9 UltraWide monitor aims at digital professionals with Thunderbolt 2 compatibilty and a wider field of view.
