Microsoft Teases HoloLens Ahead of MWC

A cryptic teaser from Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman points out a possible Mobile World Congress 2019 launch for the HoloLens 2, the next take by the Windows maker on the augmented reality headset.

Microsoft HoloLensAdmittedly the 42-second video shows very little other than trippy visuals, such as blocks of metal melting into liquid before forming glowing fibres, but the fact it was posted by Kipman is significant. After all, the man is one of the minds behind the first HoloLens headset, and the timing is seems right for the launch of a second generation headset.

Rumours suggest Microsoft has been working on the 2nd generation HoloLens for at least some time. Codenamed "Sydney," it is said to offer an improved field of view from a more comfortable device with a lighter frame. Some sources suggest the device is powered by a Qualcomm ARM processor, rather than an Intel chip, giving it the functionality of an Always-Connected PC.

Earlier this year Microsoft did confirm it will hold a MWC press event on 24 February 2019, a first in over 4 years, with CEO Satya Nadella, CVP Julia White and, yes, Kipman in attendance.
