The Fire Shield SSD Able to Withstand 800°C Heat

Storage and memory vendor Innodisk presents an SSD able to withstand 800°C of heat for up to 30 minutes-- the Fire Shield SSD, a storage device inspired by black boxes, the famous flight recorder boxes used in commercial aircraft.

Fire ShieldFeaturing heat proofing technology patented by the USPTO, the Fire Shield SSD features three layers of protection. The first enclosure consists of a flame-resistant copper alloy material, while the second uses a heat-isolating lining material. A third protective enclosure houses the actual SSD. Innodisk says the design uses over 20 heat-resistant materials, and it ensures the SSD is not only fireproof, but also vibration- and impact-proof.

Inside the enclosure is a regular SSD in a 3.5-inch form factor. It is built using SLC or iSLC NAND flash, allowing for a program-erase (PE) cycle of 60000 cyles in the SLC model (or 20000 for the iSLC option), and sequential read/write speeds of up to 520/360Mbps. Connectivity takes place via SATA III. Also found in the SSD are iSMART disk health monitoring and an intelligent health recovery system.

The Fire Shield is aimed primarily for use inside vehicles, and as such comes in limited capacities at 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128GB.
