Samsung announces a successor to microSD-- Universal Flash Storage (UFS), a removable memory card format promising better performance for use in high-resolution video recording.

Samsung UFSBased on the JEDEC UFS 1.0 card extension standard, UFS cards feature sequential read speeds of 530MB/s, a dramatic increase from the 95MB/s ofered by UHS-1 microSD cards. Random reads are also faster at 40000 IOPS, while random write speeds reach 35000 IOPS.

Sequential write speeds reach 170MB/s, almost double of of microSD cards.

“Our new 256GB UFS card will provide an ideal user experience for digitally-minded consumers and lead the industry in establishing the most competitive memory card solution,” Samsung says. “By launching our new high-capacity, high-performance UFS card line-up, we are changing the growth paradigm of the memory card market to prioritise performance and user convenience above all.”

The UFS format sounds impressive, but does with one caveat-- so far few devices support it, with the most notable examples being the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The company is still to say when the cards will be available, but they should come in 32, 64, 126 and 256GB capacities.
