Apple Ends Thunderbolt Display

Apple confirms it is ending sales of the only monitor it makes, the Thunderbolt Display-- but the press continues to insist a much rumoured replacement remains in the works.

Thunderbolt"We’re discontinuing the Apple Thunderbolt Display," the company tells The Verge. "It will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorised Resellers while supplies last. There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users."

The 2560x1440 resolution Thunderbolt Display was much loved by Apple fans, but the monitor has not seen an update since 2011. However, while Apple is still to confirm its plans regarding the monitor industry, the grapevine says a 4K (if not 5K) update is to launch sooner, rather than later.

According to TechCrunch and other sources the updated Apple monitor features an internal GPU-- allowing just about every Mac user to easily upgrade to a higher resolution display. As for connectivity, Thunderbolt technically carries enough bandwidth for an external GPU, although USB-C might also be a possibility.

However, until any official announcement takes place customers wanting a Mac monitor are best to take the company's own advice and look into any number of 3rd party alternatives.
