AVG Crowdfunds Chime Router

AVG takes to Indiegogo to launch a consumer mesh network router-- the Chime, a device the company says differs from the likes of the Luma router through the addition of backed-in security.

ChimeLike other mesh network routers found in enterprise environments, multiple Chime units work together to cover the house in "strong and reliable" wifi. The 802.11ac router features dual-band 2.4/5GHz radios, together with a dual-core CPU, x1 USB 2.0 port and x2 ethernet port, and AVG claims a single Chime handles up to 50 devices.

However the supposed main draw for the Chime is security-- AVG says the router analyses inbound and outbound traffic for malware and phishing attempts. It also enhances user privacy via direct VPN and Tor access.

However one has to keep in mind the router carries the free version of AVG security services, whose privacy policy allows the company to collect and sell browsing and search history data to 3rd parties. According to Engadget the company is still to decide on the privacy policy included in the Chime, but customers wary of such data collection should consider themselves warned.

Either way AVG plans to ship the Chime on September 2016.
