A Smart Device... to Pray the Rosary

It sounds like a headline from a satirical publication-- "Vatican launches Click to Pray eRosary." But no, the eRosary is a very real device, an "interactive, smart and app-driven wearable device" developed by Acer in collaboration with, yes, the Vatican.

Launched on October, the Catholic month of the rosary, the eRosary is described as "a tool for learning how to pray the rosary for peace in the world." It is a wrist-worn device consisting of ten consecutive black agate and hematite beads, with a cross containing all the actual tech. Users pair it with a companion smartphone app for access to an audio guide, "exclusive" images and personalised content, all about praying the rosary.

Sony Further Teases PlayStation 5

Sony continues to slowly but surely ramp up the hype for the fifth PlayStation console as it announces the next-generation console, sensibly named the PlayStation 5, is set to launch in time for the 2020 holiday season.

The announcement comes as the company gives Wired a sneak peak of the machine. As previously confirmed, the PS5 is based on AMD technology, with a Ryzen-based CPU and Navi GPU. Details on the capabilities of the hardware are scant, but system architect Mark Cerny does confirm it features ray-tracing acceleration, allowing it to push some truly sophisticated lighting simulation.

Sony Promises Power Savings With PlayStation 5

We are still quite some time away from receiving concrete details regarding the PlayStation 5, but Sony presents some interesting tidbits at the UN Climate Summit-- specifically involving the power-saving capabilities of the upcoming machine, of course.

According to Sony, the PS5 allows users to suspend gameplay at "much lower consumption" compared to the PS4, at around 0.5W. To do so, the machine uses an integrated system-on-chip with all components held on a single substrate, together with an energy-saving suspend-to-RAM mode. If 1 million owners take advantage of such capability, the company claims, it would bring electricity savings equivalent to the average consumption of 1000 homes in the US.

HTC Details Vive Cosmos VR Headset

HTC presents the specifications and release date of the Vive Cosmos-- a next-generation PC-powered VR headset promising improved LCD panels, built-in head tracking, integrated sensors and fully-tracked motion controllers.

First announced back at CES 2019, the Vive Cosmos uses two 3.4-inch RGB LCD displays, each with 1440 x 1700 resolution making for 2880 x 1700 combined resolution. The displays are also capable of 90Hz refresh rate and a 110-degree field of view, the same as the original Vive. Interestingly, the headset has flip-out goggles, meaning users can easily take a break from VR without removing the headset. Connectivity comes through DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0, or the addition of a WiGig-based wireless adapter.
