Sony Aims Tough SSDs at 4K Video

Sony presents the G Series Professional SSDs-- drives able to write up to 2400 terabytes without failure or frame dropping, making them ideal for videographers working on 4K video.

The G Series drives come in 960GB (SV-GS96) and 480GB (SV-GS48) capacities, with both drives able read at up to 550MB/s and write at 500MB/s. Also included is "built-in technology preventing sudden speed decreases, while ensuring stable recording of high bit-rate 4K video without frame dropping."

Built-in data protection technology protects the drives from power failures, while the connectors are able to handle 3000 removals and insertions, or "six times more tolerance" than regular SATA connectors, even in "harsh conditions."

Drobo announces the 5N2-- a 5-bay NAS with featuring functionality from the company's enterprise-level products while being aimed at connected home users, media professionals and SMBs.

The 5N2 holds up to 5 HDDs or SSDs, with any mixture of drives. It also carries one mSATA SSD in the Drobo Accelerator Bay. BeyondRAID technology allows features such as drive hot-swapping, single or dual disk redundancies, instant expansion and secure remote access for private cloud configuration.

Connectivity comes from two 1Gb ethernet ports. Included software such as DroboDR allows users to set up a pair of 5N2s for offsite data copies and DroboPix provides mobile picture and video management. An internal battery protects against data loss during power outages.

Qnap systems releases the TS-453Bmini-- a vertical NAS powered by an Intel quad-core 1.5GHz CPU ideal for both home and small office use.

Aimed at data storage, backup and file sharing applications, the TS-453Bmini features AES-NI hardware encryption and 4K media output and transcoding capabilities. It promises drive read speeds of up to 225MB/s with smooth performance under dual network environments. Pushing performance are 4/8GB of DDR3L dual-channel RAM, while connectivity comes through dual gigabit LAN ports and SATA 6GB/s, as well as x1 HDMI, x4 USB 3.0 and x1 USB 2.0 ports.

Total storage can reach up to 120TB by using an 8-bay UX-800P expansion unit (when using 10TB HDDs). Container Station supports container applications, including QIoT Containers and IoT applications, while Virtualisation Station allows users to run multiple Windows, Linux Unix and Android virtual machines. QmailAgent centralises email accounts for simplified management, and Qcontaz centrally stores and manages contact information.

According to Sony the SF-G UHS-II SD card is the fastest yet, with read/write speeds reaching 300MB/s and 299MB/s respectively, making it perfect for photographers and videographers.

Toshiba Intros MN Series HDDs

Toshiba claims to "bridge the value gap" between top-end enterprise and entry-level desktop HDDs with the MN series, a storage line featuring 7200RPM performance and up to 8TB capacity.

The MN series comes in a 3.5-inch form factor, and is ideal mid- and entry-level NAS enclosures, remote-office backups, archival storage and home multimedia data archives. Connectivity comes through 6Gbits/s SATA interface, while performance specs include 7200RPM speed, 1 million hour MTTF rating and a rated annual workload of 180TB transferred.

The company adds the drives are designed for 24/7 operation, with rotational vibration compensation technology providing consistent performance in tower and low-density style multi-drive enclosures such as small NAS platforms.

Kingston Digital announces what it claims is the largest USB flash drive available-- the DataTraveler Ultimate Generation Terabyte (GT), a portable device offering up to 2TB of storage.

Revealed at CES 2017, the DataTraveler Ultimate GT uses USB 3.1 (as opposed to the latest USB-C standard) and comes inside zinc-alloy casing for extra protection. According to the company the 2TB option can store up to 70 hours of 4K video, not to mention any number of regular files, within a fairly small form factor.
