A Light-Emitting Breakthrough in Photonics?

Researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) claim to have developed the "Holy Grail" of the microelectronics industry-- light emissive silicon, key to creating the photonics-based computers of the future.

According to the researchers, current electronics are soon set to hit the ceiling. The limiting factor is heat, the result of the resistance electrons experience as they travel through the copper lines connecting the many transistors on a chip. Photons, the particles making light, can not only deliver more data, but can do so without producing heat.

InWin Intros Mid-Tower Case for Creators

Taiwanese PC hardware maker InWin announces the C200, a mid-tower ATX PC chassis designed for content creators and creative professionals wanting a simple yet sturdy case with ample space for storage devices.

First seen back at CES 2020, the C200 lacks the frills typical of PC hardware aimed at the gaming market. It is built using strong SECC steel side panels, and features large thumbscrews for the easy removal of panels. In total, the case has space for up to six 3.5-inch HDDs (customers can convert the drive cages to SSDs) and two 2.5-inch SSDs, plus two 5.25-inch drive bays ideal for ODDs or up to three front-accessible hot-swappable HDDs.

A Credit Card-Sized AMD Ryzen Board

Embedded systems specialist DFI reveals what it claims is the smallest single-board computer (SBC) using an AMD Ryzen Embedded processor-- the GHF51, a highly integrated motherboard the size of a credit card.

Unsurprisingly, the GHF51 brings to mind the Raspberry Pi micro-PC, even if it promises the capabilities of a modern PC. The 1.8-inch platform carries the AMD dual-core Ryzen Embedded R1000-series SoC, together with a Radeon Vega GPU. The GPU carries three compute units (192 stream processor), and offers built-in H.264, H.265 and VP9 decoding. Users can add 2/4/8GB of single-channel DDR4-3200 RAM and 16/32/64GB of eMMC storage to the board. Further features include a mini PCIe slot for add-in cards, an 8-pin DIO header, x2 micro HDMI 1.4 inputs, x1 USB-C port, x1 GbE connector (controlled by an Intel I211AT or I210IT chip) and an fTPM 2.0 chip.

Fractal Design Intros Era ITX Cases

Swedish PC hardware maker Fractal Design announces what it describes as a next-generation mini-ITX case design-- the Era ITX, a compact chassis promising a "perfect combination of elegant design and technical engineering."

Designed in collaboration with Intel, the Era ITX features a surfaced aluminium exterior and top inserts in a choice of different materials, including wood and tempered glass. While small, Fractal Design says a flexible PSU mounting system allows the case to carry a 9th gen Intel Core processor together with a dual-slot GPU, AIO water cooling unit (up to 240mm) and up to x4 storage devices.

FSP Puts 2 PCs in T-Wings Chassis

Taiwanese PC accessory maker FSP launches a unique-looking PC case able to carry two PCs-- the T-Wings (CMT710), a semi-open chassis complete with an angular winged design the company says is inspired by bat wings.

First seen back at CES 2020, the T-Wings is primarily aimed at "hardcore gamers," as well as high-end desktop systems. As such, it is fully RGB LED-lit and offers liquid cooling support with up to two 360mm radiators. Construction is in aluminium with 4mm tempered glass panels, and customers have to keep in mind the wings are fixed, not animated.
