Intel Reveals Studybook Design

Intel announces an addition to the Classmate education-aimed product family-- the Studybook, a tablet it describes as "a student's rugged window to the world."

Currently available as a reference design, the Studybook has most of the features one expects in a device for younger customers. It is a 7" (1024x600) Atom-powered tablet running on either Android 3.0 or Windows 7 with 1GB of RAM. Storage ranges from 4-32GB to a 128GB SSD.

Gartner: Apple Continues Dominating Tablets

According to Gartner 2012 WW tablet sales will grow by 98% Y-o-Y to total 118.9m, as the Apple iPad continues dominating the market.

In comparison 2011 tablet sales total 20m units.

The analyst projects iPad global market share will reach 61.4% in 2012-- with non-Apple vendors finding limited success in the market, despite the international Amazon Kindle Fire launch.

Making things worse for the competition is Apple resetting "the benchmark for the product to beat" with the new iPad.

Flexible LG Displays Launching Soon

EReaders might soon get lighter and more flexible-- LG Display plans to launch a flexible plastic electronic paper display (EPD) in Europe for eReader use this month, a world first according to the company.

The LG design measures 6" diagonally and handles XGA (1024x768) resolutions. Construction is in plastic, meaning the display is only 0.7mm thick and weighs 14g (50% less than traditional glass displays). The iPad might rule the tablet market, but the situation might change soon enough-- ABI Research predicts low cost (sub-$400) tablets will take over 60% of the market by 2016, while the over $400 segment shrinks.

Think Google's ambitions to take over the laptop market with Chromebooks are over? Maybe the cloud-based notebook concept will be getting some fresh blood soon, as America's FCC-approval website reveals a Chrome OS-powered Sony Vaio model.

The recently declassified FCC listing for the Vaio VCC111 series features a number of photos, including one of a keyboard lacking a Windows button. It also has a copy of a user manual explaining how to use Chrome OS.

Dell to Challenge Apple With Windows Tablets

As the 3rd iPad hits the market (3M already sold WW since March 16, Apple gloats), Dell chief commercial officer Steve Felice insists the tablet market is still "wide open" for non-iOS devices.

Speaking to Reuters, Felice says Dell plans to launch Windows 8 tablets sometime around H2 2012-- with a particular focus on office workers looking for an enterprise-class device.

The Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG not only has an unwieldy name, it is also carries a GeForce GT640M, the first Nvidia GPU based on the power efficient Kepler architecture.

Nokia Tablet Rumours Persist

Nokia already makes Windows smartphones-- but will it really start making tablets? DigiTimes insists so, saying Nokia will enter the tablet race with a 10-inch Windows 8 offering sometime in Q4 2012 "at the earliest."

The Nokia tablet will apparently carry a dual-core Qualcomm SoC... in which case, judging from the Qualcomm SoC roadmap, it could be the Snapdragon S4.
