Extending USB Signals With Newnex

Newnex reveals what it say is the first USB 3.0 active repeater-- the FireNEX-uLINK-D, capable of repeating a USB 3.0 signal for over 14 metres of standard USB cable.

Shown at a press event at CES 2012, the FireNEX-uLINK-D is bus powered (needing no external power or drivers) and plug and play.

Also seen at CES is the FireNEX-5000-- the first USB 3.0 optical repeater according to Newnex. Using fibre it sends USB signals for over 100m, far beyond the standards of regular USB cable.

Cisco Takes on Powerline

Cisco announces a HomePlug AV Powerline solution range with products allowing costumers to use their existing home electrical wiring as a home network.

The Powerline standard provides speeds of up to 200 Mbps, and is set up by connecting the adapter to a router (via Ethernet cable) before plugging it into a wall socket. The network is complete after plugging a second adapter into another wall socket and connecting it to a device via second cable.

The Cisco Powerline range consists of 3 products-- Continue reading...

US-CERT Issues WPS Security Warning

The current Wifi Protected Setup (WPS) standard has a major vulnerability affecting millions of devices worldwide, according to security researcher Stefan Viehbock and the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT).

The researchers say a security hole allows one to access a WPS PIN-protected network in around 2 hours through the use of "brute force," since routers send a message informing potential hackers if the first 4 digits are correct while using the last digit of the key as a checksum. WiGig Devices Get PlugFest Testing

The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) announces the first PlugFest event-- where alliance members will test the interoperability of devices using the WiGig standard.

The event runs for 3 days and is organised in collaboration with MET Labs and UL CCS, two leading independent compliance, testing and certification houses, and key test instrumentation provider Agilent Technologies.

The event marks a transition for WiGig-- from technology specification (currently standing at version 1.1) to actual Continue reading...

The Rise of the Routers

The Cisco Home Networking Business Unit is focusing on what it does best-- wireless routers, as the unit keeps both Linksys brand and its place within the parent company.

The company now wants routers to play a larger role within the networked home-- serving as the hub between home network and the internet, where one box handles many connectivity functions (including connecting devices from all vendors) via IEEE 802.11n wireless.

The focus in direction follows canned attempts in entering the consumer Continue reading...

Netgear Boosts Wifi Router

Netgear launches the N900 wireless dual band router, handling wifi speeds to up to 900Mbps (with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands delivering data at 450Mbps).

It carries x6 internal antennas with "ultra-high-power radio amplifiers" providing more wifi range-- and wireless speeds at any given distance-- according to Netgear.

Two USB ports provide further connectivity, and an improved processor should increase data saving and retreiving speeds by up to 30%.

The company also includes a number of additional Continue reading...

Boosting Wifi Networks' Range

Netgear promises to improve your clients' wifi networks' coverage with its WN3000RP universal wifi range extender, eliminating their wireless dead spot problems.

The extender keeps things simple by using no cables-- it plugs into any electrical outlet, while LED indicators help one find the best location for optimal coverage (usually half-way between the home router and the dead spot in question).

Through Push 'N' Connect (using WPS) it should also connect easily to both computers and routers. Continue reading...
