Toshiba Boosts HDDs to 16TB

Toshiba announces the addition of 16TB helium-sealed models to both N300 NAS HDD and X300 Performance HDD series at IFA 2019, an upgrade over previous 14TB models that also boosts the buffer from 256 to 512MiB.

Aimed at performance, gaming and small business NAS applications, the 16TB N300 and X300 HDDs use a 9-disk helium-sealed design. According to the company it brings an increase in storage density with a lower operating power profile. Laser wielding technology and case design keep the helium securely sealed within a standard 3.5-inch enclosure.

Toshiba Debuts Tiny NVMe SSD Form Factor

Toshiba takes to the 2019 Flash Memory Summit to reveal XFMEXPRESS-- a technology for removable PCIe attached NVMe storage devices in form factor smaller than 22 x 30mm M.2 cards.

The XFMEXPRESS card measures 18 x 14 x 1.4mm, making it just slightly larger and thicker than a microSD card. It mounts into a latching socket making for a 22.2 x 17.75 x 2.2mm footprint. In comparison, standard BGA SSDs are 11.5 x 13mm with a PCIe x2 interface or 16.20mm with a PCIe x4 interface. The result, Toshiba says, is a removable storage format for devices making use of soldered BGA SSDs or eMMC and UFS modules, allowing for both aftermarket upgrades or even smaller embedded devices.

The Fire Shield SSD Able to Withstand 800°C Heat

Storage and memory vendor Innodisk presents an SSD able to withstand 800°C of heat for up to 30 minutes-- the Fire Shield SSD, a storage device inspired by black boxes, the famous flight recorder boxes used in commercial aircraft.

Featuring heat proofing technology patented by the USPTO, the Fire Shield SSD features three layers of protection. The first enclosure consists of a flame-resistant copper alloy material, while the second uses a heat-isolating lining material. A third protective enclosure houses the actual SSD. Innodisk says the design uses over 20 heat-resistant materials, and it ensures the SSD is not only fireproof, but also vibration- and impact-proof.
