Asus Intros Chromebook Flip C436

Asus announces a Chromebook addition-- the Flip C436, available in two flavours both featuring an Intel Comet Lake CPU, with either the dual-core Intel i3-10110U or the quad-core i5-10210U.

Like the name might suggest, the Flip C436 has a 2-in-1 hybrid design. The 14-inch 1080p touchscreen is attached to the keyboard via 360-degree hinge allowing use in multiple configurations, including as a tablet, with a stand or simply as a regular notebook computer. The chassis is built out of magnesium allow and comes in a choice of two colours, transparent silver or aerogel white.

IDC: Work-at-Home Brings Surge in Notebooks and Tablets

According to IDC, Q1 2020 sees spike of around 30% Y-o-Y in demand for notebooks and tablets across Europe, as coronavirus (aka Covid-19) lockdowns lead companies to equip employees to work from home while students set themselves to study remotely.

"This has led to many retailers and distributors in W. Europe running out of stock," the analyst says. "Disruption to the supply chain in China following the lockdown in Wuhan over the Chinese New Year cut deliveries into the European market by approximately 15%–20% in Q1 2020. More than 90% of the portable PCs and tablets imported into Europe are manufactured and assembled in China.”

AMD might offer mobile PC makers the Ryzen Mobile 4000 series processors, but Origin takes a step further with the EON15-X AMD, a high-end laptop powered by a choice Ryzen 3000 desktop SKUs, including the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900.

An update on the EON15 line of gaming laptops, the EON15-X AMD comes in 6-, 8- and 12-core configurations aimed at gamers and content creation wanting the multi-core performance of the 7nm Zen 2 architecture. The processor is paired with up to 64GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, up to 4TB of SATA SSD storage and a choice of Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB or 2070 8GB graphics card.

HP Updates Envy 17 Laptop

HP announces a refresh of the Envy 17 premium laptop-- one featuring a 17.3-inch display with (optional) 4K UHD capability, together with a 10th generation Intel Core i7 processor and up to Nvidia MX330 graphics.

The display claims an 86% screen-to-body ratio, but slimmer bezels make for a laptop smaller than the previous Envy 17 model. HP offers the 2020 Envy 17 in a number of storage configurations, including dual-storage with up to a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, a 1TB 7200rpm SATA HDD and a 16GB PCIe NVMe Intel Optane drive and even up to a 1TB PCIe NVM TLC M.2 SSD.

Apple Updates iPad Pro

Apple confirms various rumours with the March announcement of a new iPad Pro model-- one featuring a more powerful A12Z Bionic processor and an ultra-wide camera with a "breakthrough" LiDAR scanner providing depth-sensing capabilities.

“The new iPad Pro introduces advanced technologies never before available in mobile computing,” the company says. “Combining the most advanced mobile display with powerful performance, pro cameras, pro audio, the breakthrough LiDAR Scanner and new Magic Keyboard with Trackpad, this is another huge leap forward for iPad. There’s no other device in the world like the new iPad Pro and we think our customers are going to love it.”

The Return of the reMarkable eReader

Back in 2016, Norwegian startup reMarkable launched the self-titled reMarkable, an oversized eReader with a "Canvas" display users can draw on. Now the device gets a sequel, and it claims to be "the most paper-like digital device the industry has ever seen."

Imaginatively named the reMarkable 2, the update features a change in design. Whereas the original is symmetrical, the sequel features a chrome band along the left-hand side, making it look more like a regular paper notebook. It is also thinner at 4.7mm, while the 10.3-inch 2nd generation Canvas display promises to be twice as the previous version, while offering a textured surface material making it feel more like paper than an eInk display.

Lenovo Updates ThinkPad Portfolio

Lenovo announces a trio of additions to the ThinkPad portfolio-- the T, X and L series, designed to provide a "broad customer choice and a smarter workforce experience" with a range of features and a choice of Intel or AMD processors.

The company claims it is the first to offer laptops running on the AMD Ryzen PRO 4000 Mobile processor, as well as a selection of 10th gen Intel Core vPro processors. In addition, the laptops offer features such as smartphone-style always-on "Modern Standby," Wifi 6 and up to CAT 16 WWAN connectivity, unified communications function keys, built-in ThinkShield security solutions and UHD, OLD and Dolby Vision display options.

Huawei Intros MatePad Pro 5G

Huawei had a tablet announcement in store for MWC 2020, but since the Barcelona event is cancelled it just had to do it the regular way-- the MatePad Pro 5G, a self-explanatory 5G update of the iPad Pro-style MatePad Pro.

Announced last year for the Chinese market, the MatePad Pro is a high-end Android tablet. It features a 10.8-inch 16:10 aspect ratio AMOLED touchscreen complete with a punch hole for an 8MP front-facing camera. Display resolution clocks at 2560 x 1600, and Huawei claims it has a screen-to-body ratio of no less than 90%. The display is also allows for pen input, specifically through the (not included) M-Pencil stylus.

DigiTimes: New iPad Pro Shipments to Peak in April

Apple should launch a the latest iPad Pro at around March 2020, but according to DigiTimes shipments will only peak until after April, since component suppliers are still ramping up output following an extended Chinese New Year break.

The reason behind the longer-than-usual break is, of course, the coronavirus outbreak. DigiTimes says upstream supply chain partners kicked off component production for the new model before the Lunar New Year, but the epidemic has put on the break. As a result, shipments may peak at a monthly level of over 3.5 million units in Q2 2020, since assemblers will only start ramping up shipments from March.
