Lenovo Intros ThinkPad X1 Laptops

Lenovo launches a first set of commercial laptops following the Project Athena program making part of the ThinkPad range-- the X1 Carbon, X1 Yoga convertible, the premium X390 and T490 and more affordable L13 and L13 Yoga.

All the ThinkPad laptops feature ThinkShield security, with multi-factor Windows Hello authentication and a hybrid HD+IR camera keeping the screen safe from prying eyes, as well as premium usability through HD displays, immersive Dolby Audio and the ThinkPad keyboard. Select models also offer LTE-A Wireless WAN and Wifi 6 connectivity, together with 10th generation Intel Core CPUs and all-day battery life.

Tablet Market Declines but Huawei Sees Growth

Strategy Analytics reports global tablet shipments fell -7% Y-o-Y in Q2 2019 and Windows demand continued to slide as the commercial refresh now favors lower-cost notebook and convertible PC form factors. Huawei manages to see a 4% Y-o-Y increase despite the current trade war, even if demand might shift to other vendors, namely Samsung and Lenovo.

"Samsung and Lenovo shipment growth exceeded market performance, yet still showed declines of -1% and -6%, respectively," the analyst says.

IDC: "Modest" Decline for Tablets in Q2 2019

The global tablet market is down by -5% Y-o-Y in Q2 2019 IDC reports, as shipments total 32.2 million units, down from the 33.9m units of Q2 2018. Apple remains leader of the tablet market, thanks to the launch of the latest iPad Air.

Apple is one of the 2 vendors in the top 5 (with the other being Amazon) to see growth in Q2 2019. iPad shipments are up by 6.1% Y-o-Y, reaching 12.3m units, while market share sees an increase of 4 percentage points over Q2 2018 to 38.1%. As mentioned earlier the iPad Air helped bring growth, particularly in detachable tablets, while shipments of the regular slate iPad are down by -7.5% Y-o-Y as they fail to maintain the momentum of upgrades seen in 2018.

Apple announces refreshes of both the MacBook Air and the entry-level 13-inch- MacBook Pro-- the Air gets True Tone in the Retina display, while the Pro features the Touch Bar, Touch ID and a True Tone Retina display.

As well as the aforementioned 13-inch True Tone Retina display, the MacBook Air includes an 8th generation dual-core Intel processor, Touch ID security, stereo sound and "all-day" battery life. True Tone automatically adjust colour temperature for a more comfortable viewing experience, and is best suited for daily tasks of the web surfing, photo editing and FaceTime call variety.

Microsoft Working on Foldable Surface?

IHS Markit claims Microsoft has plans to release a "small foldable Surface" sometime in H1 2020-- a device featuring two 9-inch displays in a 4:3 aspect ratio running on Windows 10.

The information comes from a Forbes story citing IHS Markit associate director, consumer electronics, Jeff Lin. According to "supply chain info," the foldable Surface device will feature the Lakefield Intel 10nm system-on-chip with always-on mobile connectivity (LTE or 5G) and the ability to run Android apps and iCloud service on Windows 10. As for the OS, it is technically WCOS (Windows Core OS) with dual-display UI.
