Audio Control Through Cable Presses?

Google looks into turning the headphone cable into a control interface through the experimental I/O smart braid, a fabric cord allowing users to control a connected smartphone through pinch, squeeze and swipe gestures.

A Google blogpost describes a "helical sensing matrix" (HSM) consisting of a series of capacitive and conductive yarns woven into the braid. The yarns can detect gestures from any angle or part of the cables, with an experimental setup involving single taps for play/pause, a double-top for skip track and a twist for volume adjustments. NFC Forum Takes on Wireless Charging

The NFC Forum, the organisation behind Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, approves and a Wireless Charging specification (WLC) allowing charging through the wireless standard.

The the WLC users will be able to wirelessly charge small, battery-powered consumer and IoT devices at a power transfer rate of up to 1W, all using a single antenna in an NFC-enabled device. Such devices will still be able to communicate using the same antenna, and the solution should make it easier to charge low-power devices such as wearables and digital pens.

Tex Brings Back 7-Row ThinkPad Keyboard

Customers nostalgic for the 7-row keyboard found in old IBM ThinkPad machines get a solution from Taiwanese startup Tex-- the Shinobi, an external keyboard inspired by the classic hardware.

The last time we've seen a device featuring the 7-row keyboard layout was in 2017 in the shape of a special edition 25th Anniversary ThinkPad. However that device has come and gone like, as Tex puts it, "the shooting star soared through the darkest night," leading to the creation of the Shinobi. The mechanical keyboard is based on the ThinkPad X61 and comes in various layouts, including EU-ISO, UK and US-ASCII, all with Cherry MX1A switches in a choice of feel (blue, red, black).

Whirlwind FX Adds Reactive Lighting to Element Keyboard

The Element is a mechanical gaming keyboard with a twist on the RGB lighting typical of such devices-- the backlighting is, according to maker Whirlwind FX, "content-reactive," and can mirror the on-screen action.

The company says the effect comes thanks to a software engine that "detects and recognizes events and critical utility moments-- explosions, varied environments, damage taken, health levels, healing, shields-- producing synchronized LED patterns, bursts of colour and particle systems to heighten immersion." Also included is a "constantly-expanding" library of extensions for individual games allowing for such effects.
