Microsoft cements its hardware ambitions with the announcement of the Surface Book 2-- a sequel to the 2015 notebook featuring 8th generation Intel processors and a 15-inch display option.

Surface Book 2The Surface Book 2 looks very similar to the original (not to mention the 2016 update), even if Microsoft insists just about every detail has been tweaked. As the most powerful piece of hardware from the Windows maker yet, it carries 8th gen quad-core Intel Core processors, with the Core i7 models adding GeForce 10-series series graphics.

The 15-inch model has a 3240 x 2160 resolution touchscreen and offers a GTX 1060 with 6GB video RAM, while the 13-inch model has a GTX 1050 with 2GB video RAM. Further hardware details include up to 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. An improved hinge promises to wobble less when the display is touched, while the battery promises up to 17 hours of use in laptop mode or 5 hours in tablet mode.

Connectivity comes through x2 USB-A and x1 USB-C ports, together with an SDXC card reader, and Microsoft says the device makes an ideal base for its upcoming Windows Mixed Reality plans.

The Surface Book 2 ships from November 2017.
