Aspiring photographers get an entry-level Nikon DSLR option with the D3400-- a camera featuring a 24.2MP CMOS sensor and always-on Bluetooth LE to automatically transfer photos to smartphones via SnapBridge app.

Nikon D3400The D3400 is lighter (by 15%, making it weigh 395g) than its predecessor, the 2-year old D3300, but features the same 24.2MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image sensor. It also lacks a low pass filter, a feature allowing for more detailed images. However Nikon says auto white balance performance is improved for better images in low-light scenarios, while ISO range is increased to 100-25600.

Other features include an 11-point autofocus system, 5fps continuous shooting and 1080p video recording at up to 60fps. Meanwhile SnapBridge allows connectivity with a number of Android smartphones and tablets through aforementioned Bluetooth LE. As for battery, Nikon claims it is good for up to 1200 shots on a single charge, twice as long as the D3300.

On the lens side the D3400 gets a new line of dedicated lenses-- the AF-P DX Nikkor, one the company says has a more quiet motor.

The D3400 ships from September 2016 in a package including either an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 or 70-300mm f4.5/6.3 lens. The lenses will also be available separately.
