Canonical takes to China's Meizu to bring the dream of an Ubuntu-powered smartphone to life-- and the result is the Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition, the "most sophisticated and feature-rich Ubuntu phone in the market."

Meizu Pro 5Announced ahead of MWC 2016, the Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition is a 5.7-inch handset with a 1920x108 resolution AMOLED display. It carries a 1.5GHz octa-core Samsung Exynos 7420 processor, 3/4GB RAM, 32/64GB storage, 21MP rear-/5MP front-facing cameras and a 3050mAh battery inside a metal body, making it identical to the regular, Android-powered Pro 5 in all but software.

Canonical says the latest Ubuntu version refines on the "scopes" concept (a feature allowing users to access online services directly from the home screen without need to open an app), and while the Pro 5 lacks an MHL port it still promises to provide "a traditional desktop experience."

The Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition will be available globally on a preorder basis during MWC 2016.
