The Stove Gets Connected Smarts

E-mail Print PDF

No piece of kitchen equipment appears to be safe from the addition of app-powered connected smarts-- a startup called Meld presents a pair of devices providing customers with automatic and precise stove control.

Meld The Meld system consist of a motor-powered smart knob (replaces existing stove knobs), a thermometer one clips onto pots or pans and an obligatory smartphone app tying the two together. Essentially, the user sets a desired temperature on the app before the thermometer and the knob work in tandem via Bluetooth connectivity to maintain said temperature.

The result? Perfect cooking, every time. Or so the company claims, at any rate.

Meld says the devices can ideal for a wide range of cooking methods, including poaching, frying, simmering, slow cooking and even sous vide (the sealing of meat in a plastic bag and cooking it for a long time in a water bath). And while the market already offers plenty of slow cookers and sous vide devices, Meld says its offering is cheaper and requires less kitchen space.

Predictably for such unusual devices, the Meld stove upgrade is currently available on a preorder basis on Kickstarter, where it already surpassed an initial $50000 pledge goal. It should start shipping from October 2015.
