Panasonic Launches Camera/Phone Hybrid

E-mail Print PDF

Panasonic might have stopped selling Eluga smartphones in Europe, but it is still to give up on the mobile device dream-- the Japanese company announces the DMC-CM1, a photography-focused handset.

DCM CM1Revealed at Photokina 2014, the CM1 is the first device of its hybrid ilk to carry a 1-inch 20MP CMOS sensor together with f/2.8 Leica optics, mechanical shutter and a manual control ring. It also looks unlike any other smartphone on the market, with retro-style silver metal and mate black casing similar to those of, well, cameras.

Being 21mm thick and 204g heavy, the CM1 also makes a rather sleek package.

As for the smartphone portion, it features a 4.7-inch 1920x1080 display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.3GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage (expandable to 128GB via microSD card) and 2600mAh battery. The OS of choice is Android 4.4.

Interestingly Panasonic will use France and Germany as a testing ground for the CM1, where it will launch on the 2014 holiday season. Should it prove successful with French and German customers Panasonic will roll it out in the rest of the continent sometime during 2015.
