Mirror PCs via Airtame

E-mail Print PDF

Danish hardware startup Airtame promises an easy means of mirroring PC displays on HDMI-capable displays-- a wireless dongle able to link push content from PCs to TVs or projectors via wifi.

Airtame dongleAs presented at CES 2014 the Airtame package consists of the dongle and PC (Mac, Windows, Linux) app. Users simply plug the dongle in a display's HDMI port, and the app handles either mirroring (complete with audio) or display extension.

The app also allows users to create "public streams" to either multicast or unicast displays on multiple computers, with no need for additional dongles. Operation is cross-platform, meaning users can send or receive video from any PC regardless of operating system.

Streams are in h.264 with 2-channel audio support, and the app should automatically optimise streams depending on current use (low response time and high frame rate for gaming, increased buffer as per network condition for video).

What the system cannot actually do is mirroring from or to smartphones or tablets-- Airtame admits its the most demanded feature, but one that's not possible due to manufacturer constraints on smart device screencasts.

Airtame is currently taking preorders on Indiegogo, where it smashed an initial $160000 goal (it made over $800000 so far), with shipping set for May-June 2014.
