The DISTREE 2020 keynote by CONTEXT global managing director Adam Simon gives retrospective on the channel in 2019-- the year of Windows 10, as the OS gives a huge boost to the PC market and related industries.

CONTEXT, DISTREE 2020

The channel sees 3.3% growth in 2019, "very solid" results with desktop PCs growing by an impressive 10.7%. The mobile computing category is up by 4.7%, while "other" categories follow at 2.7%. Many new categories, such as smart home and wearables, are also growing at a high rate, while telecoms are facing a slowdown. This is due to one main reason, which is the drop of Huawei smartphone sales through the channel. The printing category remains on the decline, as are some enterprise categories including storage.

The Return of the reMarkable eReader

Back in 2016, Norwegian startup reMarkable launched the self-titled reMarkable, an oversized eReader with a "Canvas" display users can draw on. Now the device gets a sequel, and it claims to be "the most paper-like digital device the industry has ever seen."

Remarkable 2

Imaginatively named the reMarkable 2, the update features a change in design. Whereas the original is symmetrical, the sequel features a chrome band along the left-hand side, making it look more like a regular paper notebook. It is also thinner at 4.7mm, while the 10.3-inch 2nd generation Canvas display promises to be twice as the previous version, while offering a textured surface material making it feel more like paper than an eInk display.

Next to it is a GPU able to push 12 teraflops of compute power from 52 compute units, allowing for what Microsoft claims is 4K resolution gaming at 60fps, as well as support for 120fps. A large massive vapour chamber and primary fan keep the console cool, in either orientation.
